Summer is right around the corner and hotter weather causes hair to become drier and more brittle with increased split ends and itchier scalp. Women with textured (wavy, curly, coiled, thick or course hair) and chemically processed hair (perms, relaxers, color-treated, keratin-treated) are especially challenged, as often the very shampoos and conditioners that are used contribute to dryness and dull looking hair.

The key is to find a line of professional quality hair care products that hydrates and conditions your hair without weighing it down.

Below are summer hair care tips to help infuse more moisture, conditioners, vitamins and protection from the sun.

Dry/Brittle Hair – From chemicals such as color, bleach, chlorine or sodium hydroxide. Try a nourishing shampoo with a gentle balance of moisturizing agents and UV protectants, followed by a deep fortifying conditioning treatment. After a thorough rinse, apply a liquid or cream leave-in conditioner and hydrolyzed silk serum containing thermal protectants. A small amount of an argan oil moisturizing cream can be applied, prior to blowing the hair on a low heat setting. Allowing the hair to air dry is even better.

Frizzy/Wiry Hair – Shampoo with non-stripping clarifying shampoo, then with a rich moisturizing shampoo. Follow with instant conditioning; or a super moisturizing condition if your hair is extra thick or highly textured, then rinse well with warm water. Apply a cream leave-In conditioner, then apply a curl enhancing mousse for definition.

Dry/Itchy Scalp – The hot sun can wreck havoc on your scalp. If your scalp gets flaky during the summer months, try this treatment at night: shampoo your hair with therapeutic shampoo for dry and itchy scalp once weekly, followed by a natural sulfate-free shampoo, then an express conditioner, rinse and towel dry. Massage small amounts of a therapeutic scalp treatment into your scalp before bedtime. You may need to do a light shampoo in the morning.

Important Note: If you use a professional salon hair care line, they can be highly concentrated, so a little will go a long way and last longer than lesser quality store brands.

With hotter climates, consider giving your hair a vacation from blow dryers, flat and curling irons. Smooth your hair into a loose pony tail with a natural daily moisturizing lotion and tame the fly away hairs with an edge controlling pomade. Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen and to stay hydrated by drinking no less that 10 glasses of water a day.
