The Right Vegetables For The Dieter

Struggling with the battle of the bulge? Don’t despair, with the right vegetables you can eat as much as you want and not gain a pound. However, you must exercise caution in choosing the vegetables that are low in calories. What are these low calorie vegetables? The following types of vegetables are great to eat if you’re on a diet or want to lose weight. They include: carrots, cucumbers, radishes, fresh green beans, celery, cauliflower, cabbage, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and lettuce. Clearly, you don’t have to go all green when you’re on a vegetable diet. These choices not only contain the least amount of calories, but are packed with essential nutrients as well.

If you are on a low carbohydrate diet you may have heard that munching on vegetables is the way to go. However, just as there are vegetables that contain low and high calories, there are also vegetables that are low and high in carbohydrates. Vegetables that are low in carbohydrates include: sprouts, leafy greens, broccoli, mushrooms, avocado, peppers, summer squash, scallions, asparagus, bamboo shoots, leeks, eggplants, artichoke hearts, okra and more. Of course, low calorie vegetables are also low in carbohydrates so you can take your pick. So as not to ruin your diet, you might want to initially stay away from vegetables that are starchy and high in carbohydrates. These include: beets, corn, parsnips, peas, all types of potatoes and winter squashes.

Other types of vegetables that should be included in your diet are those full of fiber. Though vegetables in general are good sources of fiber, there are certain types of vegetables that contain more fiber than others. Examples of fiber-rich vegetables include: brussel sprouts, carrots, beans, peas, and spinach. Other good sources of soluble fiber are cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. Soluble fiber helps keep you feeling full and therefore makes it easier for you to resist eating too much food.

Vegetables are generally helpful if you are on a diet; but, observing the right serving sizes will help accelerate the results you want to see. The National Cancer Institute has recommended certain serving sizes for different types of vegetables. The recommended serving size if you are eating raw non-leafy vegetables or cooked vegetables is half a cup. If you are eating raw leafy vegetables, the recommended serving size is one cup. If cooked beans or peas are what you’re having for a meal, the recommended serving size you should eat is half a cup.

When you pick out vegetables, try to go to the organic produce section. If you can’t get organically grown produce, then exercise caution by washing your vegetables thoroughly. Vegetables that are not organically grown contain pesticides which are harmful to your health. Of course when you are picking out vegetables you’ll want to choose the freshest available. You can tell vegetables are fresh if they are brightly colored and blemish-free or have the least amount of blemishes. In season vegetables are guaranteed to be fresh, so plan your meals around vegetables growing at certain times of the year. You shouldn’t plan on storing vegetables for too long. Buy only the vegetables you plan to eat within a few days and discard vegetables that have been stored too long.

When you eat vegetables, try to leave as much edible skin on them as possible. The skins on vegetables contain their own nutrients which can benefit your health. Eating vegetables raw is also a good idea as cooking them can take away some of their valuable nutrients while adding unwanted fat from the oil used. Vegetables are quick and cheap alternatives to fatty foods. Because they are low in fat, cholesterol, sodium and calories vegetables have been advocated to dieters for a long time.

Caution-Nail Salon Protection

Caution-Nail Salon Protection2

One important area in fashion that can easily get overlooked is the nails. Beautiful nails can help any outfit look like a perfect ten. If you prefer to get your nails done professionally there are a few beauty risks you should keep in mind.

First, DO NOT LET ANY NAIL TECHICIAN CUT YOUR CUTICLES. Rather, politely ask for your cuticles to be pushed back. The cuticle protects the nail root and snipping away at them opens the seal of protection which can lead to infection and nail-plate damage or loss of the nail itself.

Lastly, do not let a nail technician razor off foot calluses. All of us want smooth, soft feet, but a razor is not the answer. Removing calluses can cause infections or blisters since they protect underlying living tissue. Instead make sure your feet are smoothed down with a foot file after a good soaking.

Hit The Hay, Get Your Beauty Rest

Hit The Hay, Get Your Beauty Rest2

Scientific studies involving photographic tests have proven that sleep deprived individuals may be found to be less attractive to onlookers. As if not looking your best is not enough of a reason to hit the sheets; what about not feeling your best? Lacking adequate rest can potentially wreak havoc on your body and health from the inside out.

What can result from a lady not getting enough rest? Sleep deprivation has been linked to disease, depression and even weight gain. With the winter months behind us and bikini wonderland right around the corner a few extra pounds is probably not what most of us women want.

So then, how much sleep does the average adult need to look well-rested and function properly? The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 6 to 8 hours a night. Anything less and you’re not letting your body — let alone your skin — fully rejuvenate. Therefore, be sure to get your beauty rest and your skin and health will thank you.

Hit The Hay, Get Your Beauty Rest3

Many find it difficult to fall asleep at night. Here are a few quick tips to help you slumber:

  • Workout daily. Even 20 minutes of walking can help keep stress hormones from interfering with your sleep.
  • Don’t binge right before bed. Yes, that fare looks good, but it has the potential to make you restless because an active digestive system can disrupt sleep. Yet don’t go to sleep hungry, either. Instead, have a balanced meal of sleep-promoting foods such as tuna, almonds and eggs to lull you into Snoozeville.
  • Kanye may want to see all of the lights, but your body doesn’t. Minimize light, noise and temperature extremes; (your bedroom should be kept at about 68 degrees) anything that might disrupt a comfortable environment.
  • Beds are for sleeping and physical relations only. Sleep specialists recommend not reading, watching TV, working or discussing important issues in bed.
  • Consume Starbucks and Coffee Bean in the morning hours. Caffeine, nicotine or other stimulants should be avoided within four hours of bedtime. Caffeine effects can take up to eight hours to wear off.

What is Microblading?

What is Microblading2

If you are a victim of over-plucking, years of botched waxing jobs or perhaps are out seeking out the perfect brow then microblading may be the answer to your “on fleek” prayers. Permanent makeup has come under the beauty firing squad for years due to the bad results many women were experiencing. Skin discolorations, irritation, infection and even odd symmetry from inexperienced technicians were just the tip of the iceberg. Moreover, due to such revelations women have shied away from such makeup, yet it doesn’t mean they are not open to other less harmful cosmetic procedures.

This is where microblading comes into the beauty world picture. Microblading is a semi-permanent procedure that reconstructs, shapes and fills in eyebrows. It is performed with a special pin that deposits pigment under the top layer of the skin.

A pin getting up under the top layer of skin to inject an ink basically sounds like a Marvel character experiment. Therefore, as any sane woman on the planet would want to know, is microblading a painful procedure? Unlike the process that a person can undergo when receiving a tattoo, microblading pin blades are three times thinner than tattoo needles. So then, if a microblading tech performs the job right the entire process should be almost painless. Nevertheless, before beginning, a numbing solution will most likely be applied to the skin to help numb and lessen any discomfort.

What is Microblading

Now that pain is out of the way it is natural to wonder if the end results will look… well, natural. Microblading can give clients a more natural look because the technique involves a technician drawing on crisp, individual hair strokes instead of drawing an outline eyebrow shape and simply filling it in. As any nurse would explain, because the pigments are being deposited right into the epidermis thus impacting color right at the surface every stroke looks very clean without any spillage under the skin.

Now for those who caught it, the mention of nurses may have thrown you off just a tad. Microblading before becoming a beauty trend was used to help alopecia and cancer patients dealing with hair loss. Such patients often had to painstakingly apply eyebrow makeup on a daily basis before this hairstroke technique was invented.

So then, there is an ease and added benefit of being able to really say, “I woke up like this.” However, microblading is not just an one-time deal and then you are good forever. This technique is not permanent and will need to be touched up in order to keep those brows looking pristine. Moreover, as you have already guessed that would tact on future extra cost after the initial procedure.

Numerous salons as well as spas have began to offer microblading services with some going as high as around $1,000. Based upon where you decide to go spas offer touch-ups for $50 with annual touch-ups that can go for a little over $300. A little pricey, but as history shows for some the price of beauty is never too high.

Don’t Apply Foundation Over Concealer

Don't Apply Foundation Over Concealer

Beauty Quickie: Beauty experts and MUAs agree that us gals are applying our concealer all wrong. When trying to cover up those blemishes or dark under eye circles from the previous night’s festivities it is a girl’s rule of thumb to reach for the concealer. However, applying foundation over concealer basically defeats the purpose of applying concealer in the first place.

When foundation is placed over concealer, the concealer is then thinned out providing less coverage on the area or spot you are aiming to conceal. So then, what is the technique that should be used when making trouble areas less noticeable? After applying foundation you then want to dab concealer over the foundation in any area where you feel hasn’t been completely camouflaged.

Beauty Question: Are Alcohol-Based Toners Good For Oily Skin?

Beauty Question Are Alcohol-Based Toners Good For Oily Skin

Beauty Answer: Whether your skin is more prone to be oily or not it is highly recommended to avoid alcohol-based toners at all cost. We know it can be quite tempting to opt for products that seem to really be doing a bang up job in the skincare department. Many consumers love the feeling alcohol-based toners give their skin after use  which is why they buy them. In a toner, alcohol is the ingredient that gives skin a taut or tight feeling as though the skin is now extremely clean. Nevertheless, is that what it is truly accomplishing?

Sorry to burst another beauty bubble, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Alcohol is an extremely drying element that has the ability to wreak havoc on your skin and cause oily skin to be more slick. Since the alcohol sucks up your skin’s precious moisture the skin then turns around and increases oil production in order to fix the problem. Therefore, if your goal is to be less oily avoiding ingredients that are very drying is the key.

Beware of Water Temperatures For Beautiful Skin

Beware of Water Temperatures For Beautiful Skin

Beauty Quickie: That dry skin you are experiencing can literally boil down to one thing… water. Not so much as the bonded hydrogen and oxygen itself, but the temperature of the liquid-y goodness. Many know the long hailed beauty tip to never wash or shower in hot water but do not really know why that is the case. What happens to the skin when exposed to hot water?

Hot water wrecks havoc by stripping your skin of natural oils thus leaving it parched and dry. This is true whether rinsing hands, showering or even simply splashing your face. Moreover, going a step further during the winter season the air is particularly dry so then by tacking on the habit of hot water use you are in for a season of really dry skin. That is so not cute by any means, shape or form. So then, how can you prevent this from happening? Instead of using hot water opt to rinse with warm or cooler temp water instead.
