What is black girl magic? This occurs when a woman of color achieves a great accomplishment that in turn can build confidence and inspire other black girls. It’s like when a fairy sprinkles pixie dust and the recipient can suddenly do something insanely cool. As success is achieved and talked about it is sprinkled upon as well as spread to the masses showing dreams do come true.

Magic was definitely witnessed as the first sweep in Olympic history in 100m hurdles took place. Americans Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali and Kristi Castlin all leaped their way to the finish line during the talent loaded race. Rollins, Ali and Castlin showed poise, determination and of course speed.

Before the start, the feeling was tense as the athletes readied themselves for the race. Pacing and stretching instantly became second nature to all. Announcer Ato Boldon then boldly declared numerous times that the Americans had absolutely no chance at sweeping the medals. Boldon may not have believed in the ladies capabilities, however they were about to silence his ignorance.

Brianna and Nia came across the finish line undisputed as the gold and silver medal winners. Then the wait was on… would they sweep?

“Out where they walk, out where they run, out where they play all day in the sun!” Most little girls always dream of being a Disney princess. Simone Manuel is now definitely living the dream! In a super cute artwork by clothing brand Served First Manuel is seen chilling “Under the Sea” with Flounder.

In the pic Simone also rocks a crown and a gold medal! Very fitting due to her historic win. Served First recognizes just how huge Manuel’s achievement is and spoke on how they were inspired by it. They said,

“We designed our First Children’s piece aimed at encouraging young women of color that they too can achieve greatness in the face of adversity. The significance of her victory resonates profoundly with us as swimming pools have been a racially sensitive flashpoint in the U.S. for generations.

Historically, African-Americans were often denied access to swimming pools during the segregation era and long thereafter. In fact, we remember quite vividly how an entire pool was drained after actress, Dorothy Dandridge dipped her toe in.

With artwork inspired by the Little Mermaid, our nieces, sisters, cousins and daughters can now showcase their pride and affection for Simone.”
