We love getting the chance to peel back a layer and learn the real story and meaning behind a fashion look. The ladies of Christopher Nolan’s latest epic had one of the best style runs leading up to the film’s official release. Nonetheless, one fashion garment we are still not over is Lupita Nyong’o’s Nicholas Oakwell Couture The Odyssey Premiere gown that she donned in New York City.
However, did you know that this dreamy couture design has an Old Hollywood backstory? It’s true. The dress is inspired by a character from a film that is over 60 years old.
Lupita Nyong’o Nicholas Oakwell Couture The Odyssey Premiere Gown-Old Hollywood Inspired!

The Nicholas Oakwell Couture luxury label was kind enough to provide details regarding Nyong’o’s red carpet gown. A design known simply as “The Collins.” The couture house reveals,
“Lupita Nyong’o dripping in gold. She is a true GODDESS on the red carpet in Nicholas Oakwell Couture for the premiere of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey. The look is from the latest collection ‘Goddess’ with Inspiration for this look being Joan Collins in Esther and the King.
‘Collins’ is a study in structure and seduction. Metallic gold lace is sculpted over a built-in corset, shaping the body with precision before releasing into an elongated silhouette. Inspired by Joan Collins’ commanding presence in Esther and the King, the gown balances strength and sensuality through disciplined construction and fluid form.
‘Collins’ explores glamour through architecture. A corseted foundation anchors the silhouette, while metallic gold lace introduces texture, luminosity and movement. A gown conceived through proportion, control and quiet confidence.
‘Collins’ recalls the golden age of cinematic spectacle. Crafted in metallic gold lace and supported by an internal corset, the silhouette follows the body with clarity before extending into a fluid, elongated skirt. A composition of precision, presence and unapologetic glamour.”
We love it! The Golden Age of Hollywood is still having a major impact as well as influence on modern day couture. In case you were wondering or curious about how Joan Collins was dressed in Esther and the King. Here is one of her many fabulous pieces from the film.
