1966 Magazine: Tiffany, we think what you are doing for black girls and women is nothing short of amazing! Please tell us what exactly is the purpose of Nubian Stories Night Out (NSNO)?
Tiffany Dames: NSNO curates events for young Black professionals; and advocates for Black Women through entrepreneurship, comradery, and artistry. The past several months, I’ve curated an array of events, including a Fitness Bootcamp, Pop Up Dinner, an all-Black Women Art Expo, and on April 8th I will be hosting a Golden Parachute Black Business Mixer. Each of my previous events has gradually grown, creating a following that I strive to continue to create enjoyable experiences for.
Nubian Stories Night Out – Why Get Involved ASAP!
1966 Magazine: Very nice! Why do feel that networking events are so important for black women entrepreneurs to be apart of regularly?
Tiffany Dames: According to Fortune Magazine, “The number of businesses owned by African American women grew 322% since 1997, making black females the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S.” — This shows that plenty of us know exactly what we’re doing. However, there are even more Black women who want to make that step into entrepreneurship but cannot overcome one obstacle. Fear.
The fear of uncertainty can be debilitating. So much so, it stops us from even trying. We plan our failure more than we plan our success. Nubian Shorties Night Out strives to ease that fear by curating these events allowing us to come together, to network and build upon community economics.
1966 Magazine: Now that’s what we are talking about! So then, what’s next for NSNO?
Tiffany Dames: On April 8th our next event, entitled Nubian Shorties Night Out Presents…Golden Parachute Black Business Mixer. The goal is to create a space that gives Black entrepreneurs a chance to form an economic family, by building a set of connections to network and utilize for the promotion of their industry.
[Also] by continuing to curate events that promote and hire Black owned businesses, this offers assistance to budding entrepreneurs in building a successful brand and business. Essentially creating our own Golden Parachute to fall back on.
Nubian Stories Night Out – The Last Word
We love that Tiffany mentions the “golden parachute.” This term refers to the payment that high level executives receive upon termination. It ensures that they will be properly compensated regardless of what may happen or occur in the future.
Wouldn’t that be wonderful if that could be experienced in the black community as a whole? By networking and continuing to build together a safety net can begin to be formed.

“Yeah so I was at mom’s place and came across these old photos of my pops and granny. Let me just say they are the reasons why I am the professional Hairstylist I am today. They were driven. They were innovative. They had growing hands.
They had knowledge. Skills. Spiritual. They were creative. They were hungry. They were determined.
They had strength during times when we (you know what I mean) weren’t acknowledged for our talents and creations but set pride aside and did what needed to be done to support their family. And honey child I am here to say I got all that in my DNA. 3 generations… different eras.. similar challenges; [and] all good people. I wish they were here today so I could thank them at least; for passing it down to me. Forever grateful.”
Last thing we wanted to know was Mason’s thoughts on the long held black hair question, “What really does it mean to have ‘natural’ hair?” There are so many opinions out there. However, many do not realize being natural does not necessarily refer to hair being curly or coily.

Therefore, this subject is something we felt a professional view would be cool to have. So then, what does hair stylist, Rachel Mason have to say about it? Rachel states,
“Okay, so I want to make clear what going natural means. It means cutting out any and all chemical services to your hair. No color. No highlights. No relaxers. No perms. Virgin hair.
Easy enough right? I mentioned previously that I was going natural. I am. I am just going through something called a transition stage. You can cut it all off and rock a cute fade if it fits you to do so; rock a TWA or just cut the hair that is chemically treated and start there.
This is MY transition look and I chose to gradually go natural. I like to curl it, press it out or set it on some rods. I personally like the ability to change my hair when I feel like it and not be stuck with one look. I used to be like that once upon a time.
[However] very soon I will be completely natural, free of chemical or have virgin hair. But don’t be surprised if you see some color later down the line for summer! Here’s the thing ladies if you want to do it, do it! Make sure you do it for you and do it right. Excessive blow-drying. We must admit, at times it’s hard to think of ever living without a blow dryer. Nevertheless, it must be said that it has the ability to draw out moisture from your hair. Also, towels can make our hair frizzy, so try using an old t-shirt instead for drying your hair if you’re not really in a rush to dry your strands.
Excessive use of heated hair styling products such as straightening or a curling iron makes moisture evaporate away from your hair. Therefore, instead aim to use an ionic or ceramic type of heated hair care products and always use a hair protectant product before dealing with these hair tools.

Avocado
Indication: Dry and Damaged Hair
Mash an avocado, seed and skin not included. Add one egg, then beat the mixture. This treatment will restore health and moisture back to your hair since it is rich in vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals. Apply it directly on your hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes, and rinse thoroughly.
Unboiled Milk
Indication: Dry Hair and Unmanageable Hair
Milk is very rich in protein and is widely known for its deep moisturizing capabilities. That combination will not only make your hair healthy and strong, but it will also leave your hair feeling super smooth.
Pour unboiled milk in a small bowl. Apply the milk directly to your hair and scalp using a cotton ball. Leave it for an hour and rinse thoroughly.
Butter/ Shea Butter
Indication: Dry and Dull Hair
This is also known for its deep moisturizing effects for your skin (scalp) and hair. Butter/Shea Butter are essential oils that are full of essences that work best to hydrate your strands and leaving them looking shiny and healthy.
Massage the butter directly into your hair in a circular motion. Use a shower cap to cover your hair/head and let it sit for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.
Banana
Indication: Dry Hair
This fruit is high in potassium, antioxidants, and vitamins that keep your hair healthy and hydrated. Eating them or using them as a beautifying treatment has both health and beauty benefits.
This can easily be prepared by mashing or blending two ripe bananas. You can also add an egg in the mixture to create a paste with a high moisturizing property. Massage this paste into your hair and scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.

Honey
Indication: Dry and Frizzy Hair
This is a nourishing treatment for your hair. It also prevents frizz, leaving your hair smoother and silkier. Your natural hair color will also look more radiant after this treatment.
You can apply it directly to your hair. If you want your hair to look sleeker, you can apply the honey using a comb then let it sit for an hour. Prevent yourself from moving, clipping, folding, bending, and pressing your hair against any objects (Don’t use shower cap. Keep hair smooth as possible) Rinse and shampoo as usual.
Mayonnaise
Indication: Dry, Brittle, Unmanageable Hair
This is another great source of natural oil and proteins. It will make your hair healthier, smoother, softer and shinier at the same time. If you can put up with the sour smell, this is a great treatment that would pamper your hair to health.
You can directly apply this to your hair using slight circular pressure. Cover your hair with a plastic (shower cap) and let it sit for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual. You can also opt to add other oils and essences like olive oil and coconut oil for a boosted effect.
Aloe Vera
This is a hair beauty secret that has been used even in the ancient times. Aloe Vera is 90% water plus added vitamins and minerals known to make your hair vibrant, well-moisturized, healthy, and smooth. Based on my personal experience, it helped my hair grow faster as well.
You can prepare a treatment paste by blending or spooning out the gel of the aloe vera leaf. Feel free to add oils and essences according to your needs and preferences that will help boost its effects. You can massage it into your hair and scalp directly. Use a shower cap to cover your hair, and let it sit for at least and hour. Rinse and shampoo as usual.
For best results, make this an overnight treatment and apply aloe vera paste before you go to bed. Cover with a shower cap and rinse in the morning after.
Tips for Dry Hair

There is no doubt that many natural ingredients are packed with proteins, vitamins, and minerals that help keep our hair healthy and moisturized. So why should young girls and boys flock to go see Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time? The film’s award-winning director, Ava DuVernay, hit us with all the details as well as several fascinating reasons. “Look closely. That’s a girl. A girl of color. Saving the universe. Heroes come in all shapes and colors and walks of life.

[Nevertheless] the first image I had in my mind was to place a brown girl in the role of Meg. A girl traveling to different planets and encountering beings and situations that I’d never seen a girl of color in. I was interested in that and in a heroine that looked like the girls I grew up with.
[My daughter] Mali. She’s the true reason I made Wrinkle in Time. So she could see a girl with brown skin and eclectic tastes who is the brightest star in the universe. Just like her.”

A Wrinkle in Time- It’s A Barbie Baby!
Oh baby yeah! Wrinkle in Time is not just an amazing movie about to be released. The new Disney flick has also produced a collection of Barbie dolls based on the film’s inspiring characters.
There are dolls for Mrs. Which (played by Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (played by Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (played by Mindy Kaling). Lead actress Storm Reid says she’s, “In love with the new Wrinkle in Time dolls. My Mrs.’s look incredible, strong, and fierce.”
Nonetheless, Reid is not alone. Director Ava DuVernay is also proud and excited over the dolls. Regarding them she mentions,
“When Disney makes Barbies of your movie’s characters and you just want to stare at them all day in disbelief; because you loved Barbies as a girl but never had any like these.”

Did you know the making of this very movie marked a huge achievement in Hollywood history? Many are not aware. However, with A Wrinkle in Time, Ava is the first woman of color to direct a $100 million film.
Sad, yet a reason to still be happy. Upward movement means more opportunities in the future. Furthermore, with the wild success of Disney’s Black Panther; black directors are steadily showcasing that their skills can pull in the big bucks too. Black Panther alone broke several box office records and made over $700 million dollars in just a mere 10 days.
Nevertheless, what does DuVernay have to say about this movie milestone? In a true display of humility, Ava pays respects to the many black directors that helped pave the way. Speaking on being the first black female director of a 100 million budget movie she states,
“Not the first woman of color capable. Not by a long shot. This should have happened a long time ago with Julie Dash; or Euzhan Pacly or Kathleen Collins or Neema Barnette. We need more. And more. And more.
More voices. More kinds and creeds and colors of filmmakers. Thanks to Disney for making it so. And saluting my sister filmmakers. Onward for all of us.”
A Wrinkle in Time- Sade Plays a Part!
Well, not in the film itself, but will be apart of the movie’s soundtrack. The sultry singer’s melodic voice can be heard during an original song. How did Sade come to be apart of this Disney movie’s music? Looks like Ava once again worked her magic!
Recently, DuVernay took to social media to reveal the Sade news to fans. On the Twitter platform she revealed,
“I never thought she’d say yes, but I asked anyway. She was kind and giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget.
Proud to announce that Sade has created an original song for a Wrinkle in Time. It’s entitled, “Flower of the Universe.” And it’s a dream come true.“
A Wrinkle in Time- So it’s a Classic
What is now a film, started off as a book. Wrinkle in Time was penned by author, Madeleine L’Engle. The book was originally released back in 1962. Moreover, L’Engle was an American writer known for not only A Wrinkle in Time but it’s sequels such as A Wind in the Door.
The story of Meg and her brother Charles evolves around a tesseract. A tesseract is a “wrinkle in time.” In the book, a visitor from another realm and dimension interrupts Meg, her brother and mother thus leading the children to begin an exciting quest. We’ll stop there so as not to spoil anything; but knowing that there are additional books in the series; we are confident that if this film is successive Disney will bring the subsequent story lines to life as well.
A Wrinkle in Time- Time Travel That Will Make You Want to Travel
Big budget films means cool effects, A-list actors and of course being able to shoot at some of the most eye-popping locales around the globe! In order to achieve dramatic, unforgettable scenery and visuals the cast took a few trips.
Where did they go? Locations were scouted throughout mesmerizing New Zealand as well as the infamous Redwood Forest in northern California. Ava describes sights that took her breath away. In girl world there are two things that are usually considered to be fashion suicide. one is repeating an outfit too soon in the cycle. The other is rocking something considered to be “so last week.”
Nevertheless, Harris proves that you can still look fab in something from a past season with it feeling fresh and new. Actress Naomie Harris is currently attending the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for her latest film, Ismael’s Ghost. For her big Cannes 2017 red carpet moment she wore a gown from the Gucci Fall 2016 collection.
Her take on the Gucci ensemble is different from the original design seen coming down the Gucci catwalk. Long gone is the one shoulder floral top. Naomie replaced it with a spaghetti strap bodice in matching striped colors. This change gave her OOTD more of a spring and summery vibe.
The last component of Naomie Harris’ Cannes outfit were accessories. She paired her bold gown with a beautiful, delicate necklace from Atelier Swarovski. A nice touch that grabs a little spotlight while keeping attention on the main garment.

Set against the backdrop of the wide open plains of California, the Dior Cruise 2018 runway show was magically ethereal. Cascading tents, hot air balloons, fire pits and delicate dim lighting of lanterns danced across the catwalk into the dusk sky. Dior effortless captured the aura of the old west while infusing their runway and high-end designs with the classic modern Dior flair.
Nevertheless, forget needing to be saved by some lasso throwing cowboy. The Dior Sauvage couture came off strong, bold, rustic without sacrificing even a hint femininity. The woman who adorns herself in this collection can hold a torch on her own but can still revel and bask in her womanly allure.
Dior Cruise 2018 Runway Show
The Dior fashion house gave an earful of what served as the inspiration behind the 2018 cruise collection. Furthermore, even though the garments certainly spoke for themselves, we absolutely loved every word they said! Dior mentions,

We are not telling no Big Little Lies! The HBO series star, Zoe Kravitz Covers Allure June 2017 Issue. Editor-in-Chief Michelle Lee helped usher in the amazing news. Lee paid homage to the glamorous cover and Zoe’s cover girl role stating, “Butterflies and doves just follow her around as a harp plays. Everyone freak out… it’s Zoe Isabella Kravitz! Look at this babe. Zoe Kravitz [is] photographed by Patrick Demarchelier for the new June cover of Allure.”

When you get over 100,000 likes in a mere five hours you know you posted some serious fire! Zoe Kravitz humbly took to social to reveal her new gorgeous cover. She captioned the photo with an emoticon of a dove along with three words of gratitude, “Thank you Allure.”
Several big stars have come along to express how much they love Kravitz’s beautiful photos for the June 2017 edition. Including Uzo Aduba and Zoe’s HBO Big Little Lies co-star Reese Witherspoon. Jennifer Dickinson, the Editor of Net-A-Porter The Edit discussed Kerry as the mag’s cover star. Dickinson was kind enough to share a little BTS (behind the scenes) tidbit. She says,
“You probably already think Kerry Washington is pretty amazing, right? Well, add to that the fact that she did this shoot for The Edit when her baby son was still tiny, pumping and feeding between shots. I KNOW. Hashtag queen, but what does she do when it all gets overwhelming? Think of Shonda Rhimes obviously. Be more [like] Shonda, Kerry kills it too, power women.”
