The Little Mermaid 2023 live action remake is doing numbers! An incredible feat especially since inflation, a three year release delay and much unnecessary criticism has surrounded the film. Moreover, there are so many negative hit pieces coming out left and right about box office numbers; that we feel like the record must be set straight.

The film is only a week old at the box office. Yes, just one single week and already various media entities are desperately clutching pearls and trying to associate as well as glue the word “flop” to this amazing movie. However, BEACH PLEASE and allow us to tell you the truth!

First of all, in just 7 days The Little Mermaid live action film grossed more than the OG. No lie. You can Google if you want; but if you do, you will find the original cartoon version from 1989 rakes in $211 million. Currently, the 2023 live action version is already over $300 million. Crazy!

Yet, there is more to consider. As we reported last week, some of the box office negatives surrounding TLM come from international distribution and rollout. China’s release numbers are low and usually are way higher for Disney films. However, not all foreign markets had been tallied or accounted for in global totals.

For instance, for opening weekend the global total says $68 million for the international take. A lot numbers came in later. Moreover, now that more countries’ numbers are officially in the mix, the international box office reads as over a $140 million. That means another $72 million is now in the totals. That’s quite a jump. Many films don’t make that in an entire film release run, much less in a few days.

Of course, no one wants to report these numerical updates because they do not fit “the narrative.” Furthermore, many are forgetting that merchandising also plays a role. For example, the Ariel collector doll which retails for $150 is sold out. Supposedly, there’s only 5200 of these dolls; which means off the one doll Disney makes another $780,000. Of course, there is way more merch than just this particular doll; but helps to see where other monies will be coming from as well.

So then, what is the official box office total right now for TLM? Well, currently global totals are sitting pretty at over $326 million. A nice amount of change.

How does this compare to other Disney live action blockbusters? It compares very well. Let’s consider 2 quick examples.

First up, 2015’s Cinderella. Still a major fave of ours and if you haven’t seen it please do! Nevertheless, this film’s total box numbers is at $542 million. In one week, The Little Mermaid is over half of that.

What about 2019’s wildly successful Aladdin? Well, Aladdin also opened up during Memorial weekend to the tune of $112 million. The Little Mermaid live action? $117 million.

Furthermore, during its second weekend of release Aladdin takes in $42 million domestically. What about The Little Mermaid? $40.6 million.

The two films seem to be mirroring each other for the time being. Which is cool, because Aladdin went on to make over a billion. Moreover, Aladdin’s roster included more box office star power, like Will Smith (who for decades is simply box office gold).

Also, the headlines for Aladdin were way friendlier. Calling the movie after one week wildly successful, a smash and hit. However, Halle Bailey and company keep getting met with bad takes and extremely rude headlines despite earnings. The movie is literally one week old people, maybe after at least a month the full picture will be better painted.
