This film is SO timely. Actress Tessa Thompson stars in The Listener (directed by Steve Buscemi); an emotional film that dives into human connection and how loneliness can truly affect us all. The story focuses around a helpline volunteer who becomes part of a small army that gets on the phone every night, fielding calls from lonely, broken people. A silent growing issue worldwide.

For instance, during the Covid pandemic many reported feeling lonely or cut off from the rest of society. However, even years later, there are those that are still experiencing such feelings. Michigan University reveals that,

In 2023, one in three adults age 50–80 (34%) reported feeling isolated from others (29% some of the time, 5% often) in the past year.

Therefore, this is an issue affecting a sizeable amount of people. And it’s not just an older person problem. Forbes states, “73% of Gen-Z report feeling alone sometimes or always.” So then, a movie about and investigating this situation is very on par with the current world scene.

Furthermore, Tessa Thompson really wants viewers to feel the true feelings behind loneliness. In The Listener Tessa completely acts out her role ALONE in the film. No co-stars. All by herself. Think Tom Hanks in Castaway for 90 percent of that production.

However, Thompson says there is one little star audiences will get to see. Her dog. Thompson’s dog will be making their film debut and will be a companion to her throughout the movie; which is an element many may be able to relate to in one way or another. Since there are those who may have a dog, cat, turtle or what have you; despite being lonely. Yet, having pets is one thing; making and developing meaningful relationships with other people can be more challenging.

Nevertheless, do not think that this movie is going to be nothing but a complete “downer.” The object is not to depress us even more, but just to cause us to perhaps ponder, think of solutions or give a little more attention to the subject at hand. Thompson reveals that the movie will also include bits of humor and comedy that is sure to help round out the story for audiences.

Want to see this very well done piece of cinema?Well, be sure to mark your calendars. Tessa Thompson’s latest project, The Listener, shall hit theaters this month on March 29. It’s a Friday, so a good option for your weekend plans.
