Met Gala 2017 Fashion Recap : Honoring Designer Rei Kawakubo

It’s Gonna Be May! Break out the memes and toss your heels like confetti fashion lovers! It is the first Monday of May, which means fashion’s biggest night has arrived. This year the Met Gala 2017 celebration is showcasing the gorgeous architectural designs of Rei Kawakubo.

Moreover, if you are a couture buff you are well aware that this is certainly history in the making. Rei Kawakubo is the first living designer to be honored by the Met Costume Institute since the extraordinary, Yves Saint Laurent back in 1983. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will display the “Art of the In Between” exhibit of Kawakubo’s distinctive high end designs from May 4th through September 4th.

The public will be treated to Rei’s stunning garments that invoke, “fascination with interstitiality or the space between boundaries” as mentioned by the Met Museum. The presentation will be available for viewing in the museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall. Nevertheless, enough gabbing on our part, let’s get to this year’s celebrity fashions!

Nevertheless, this couture marriage between the two is a perfect match. Fenty finished her fit with vintage Maison Margiela boots and of course, more sunnies. Her chic sunglasses are from the Adam Selman x Le Specs collaboration. Fire.

Move over Zorro we have a new masked hero. Rihanna hit the 2017 Coachella scene in a fit straight from the Gucci Fall 2017 Menswear runway show. It had everything. Glitz, glamour and TONS of edginess. You know typical Rihanna appeal.

The singer sported Gucci’s infamous “Common Sense is Not That Common” tank top, distressed denim cut-off shorts as well as a sequined body suit. That last item is what got us. To wear a glittery body suit that also covers the face you have to have the presence and personality to pull it off. Rihanna did so without a hitch.

Furthermore, last year at Coachella Rihanna made us swoon over her Gucci sunglasses. You may remember the photos that emerged with her and actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Therefore, it is absolutely no surprise that YSL had us gagging over their Winter 2017 Paris fashion week show. All thanks to a pair of eye blinding glitter boots that we immediately had dreams of placing directly into our wardrobes. However, one uber famous style-lista has already beat us to the fashion punch! UGH, so unfair!

The YSL 2017 Winter collection itself was modern, edgy and simply fierce. Literally, models strutted down the grimey catwalk with long handbags like they were baseball bats. As if to say, “Don’t mess with a real one hunty!”

Yet, in a sea of black and neutral toned couture a spark of 70’s glamour shone through. The YSL 2017 Winter Glitter Boots are such sweet retro vibes. Its as though someone murdered a disco ball. Donated it to science and out came a pair of boots that were definitely made for walking! If Soul Train was still running some fabulous dancer would be rocking these bad boys on the very next episode!

One of our personal favorites is the glitzy number he designed for Rihanna when she received the CFDA Fashion Icon Award. It fit every curve like a glove and oozed old Hollywood glamour. Plus, it sparkled like a teenage dream. In the words of Rihanna herself it did, “shine bright like a diamond!”

The NYFW moment by Adam Selman may not have been glittery but it easily turns heads. Every show everyone always eagerly waits for the opening piece as well as the finale ensemble. This is because usually designers love to begin and end their shows with a bang.

For his finale piece Adam Selman sent what we can best describe as a “Human Bouquet” down the catwalk. Just a total gasp moment! Designers show their love of florals in the form of prints but to see an actual piece made of a gorgeous arrangement is pure genius. Adam, man…you have outdone yourself!
