Misty Copeland is making history this week due to the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) naming her as it’s first black female principal dancer. We tip our heels in her honor and hope that she continues to break a leg on stage. Trust us this is no small feat because this is the first time such honors has been bestowed upon a black ballerina (2nd black dancer after Desmond Richardson) in the dance company’s entire 75 years of existence.
Successful Black Women: Misty Copeland Named American Ballet Theatre’s First Black Principal Dancer
Misty hails from Kansas City and mentioned that being a high level dancer is something she has always wanted. Copeland revealed,
“This is it. This has been my dream since I was 13, to be a principal dancer and reach these heights… But it hasn’t been overnight. It’s been 14 years of extremely hard work … I’m just so extremely honored to be an African-American and to be in this position.”
Copeland is shining as a luminous star at time where in the current social climate there are those who believe that members of the black community are lazy, uneducated, violent or lack proper training to accomplish great things. Such views are proved incorrect time after time by such talents as Misty; nevertheless, Copeland believes there is a much different reason as to why more black dancers do not reach the career heights that she has achieved. Misty explained,
“So many young dancers of color stop dancing at an early age because they just don’t think there will be a career path for them. I hope that will change… I had moments of doubting myself and wanting to quit, because I didn’t know if there would be a future for an African-American woman at that level. At the same time, it made me so hungry to push through.”
Therefore, we implore all of you young dreamers out there and even those who think they have passed their prime to NOT GIVE UP. There may be times of doubt, times when that little voice in your head wants to tear your joy out your heart and convince you to quit. Like Misty you may feel like you are just not seeing others who “look like you” on the journey to the top. Do not be dismayed ladies, as more of us make it up the mountain of success it soon will not feel like such a lonely place. There is plenty of room up there for everyone, let’s help each other push towards the summit… it’s closer for us all than we might think.
Congratulations Misty! You are a true inspiration for us all!
Now that is the look of one hot mama! Jada has been turning heads left, right, up and all around during the press tour for the Magic Mike XXL film. For the London premiere held at Vue West End on June 30, 2015 Jada wore a fabulous shimmering Balmain frock and jewels from Monica Vinader. Now when we say that Jada killed it from every angle…the…woman…killed…it…from…every…angle (LOL)! We hope you heard every last clap from that last sentence too.
Oh! Also, do not even get us started on the shoes she wore honey! Jada strutted her stuff in a sexy noire pair of heels by Giuseppe Zanotti. Nevertheless, check the photos out for yourself and we are sure you will see exactly what we are talking about!
On yeah…the whole cast brought it as well…

Beauty Answer: We loved this question so much we decided to make the rest of this week all about applying lipstick. Orange lip color is a huge trend for this summer and the great thing is that it looks great on darker skin tones when applied correctly. However, there is a bit of caution when it comes to rocking an orange lip… it clashes with just about everything else.
Orange lipstick is already very dramatic so adding various other shades or bold makeup techniques are a no-no. We have conversed with numerous celebrity makeup artists to get the 4-1-1 on this shade and they revealed to us that the only shade that complements orange lipstick is black. They also recommended that it is best to keep the rest of your face simple when wearing orange so that you do not look overdone in a bad way.
Nevertheless, if you want to have even more fun with orange lips there are still a few ways to punch things up. Use black mascara to help make your eyes pop or use a kohl pencil or eye liner to create a cat-eye. Cat-eye makeup with orange lipstick will make you look even more exotic and alluring.
Last Tip: If black seems too severe you can also apply silvery shimmer eyeshadow with a very light hand to the inside corners of your eyes as well as along the water line. (See the photo at the outset of this post for inspiration)
There’s also one more thing you MUST know when wearing orange lipstick. Do yourself a favor and read our previous post The Truth About Orange Lipstick to learn what it is.
Songstress Kelly Rowland teamed up with celebrity hair stylist Kim Kimble to recreate iconic looks. This particular hairstyle was inspired by the beautiful Sade who famously wore her hair pulled back into a sleek braid. Here is a little visual evidence of Sade’s fab hair look:
As you can see Sade gave great face as she rocked her hair down-to-there twist braid. Rowland’s recreated look is just as gorgeous and can be fashioned at home in just a few steps!
First, if you do not have the length as my mother always said, “Fake it until you make it.” There is no shame with extensions, here in L.A. basically all women have them. It’s just important that it looks nice and well kept. Here are a few great options available now at amazon:
Kanekalon Jumbo Braid Extension Hair $3.99
Sassy Kanekalon Jumbo Braid Jet Black $2.59
Now that you got the hair it is now time to put everything together and create the hairstyle! Here is how:
1. Apply an alcohol free gel or pomade to tresses and brush strands back until smooth then secure with a hair tie.
2. Use a second hair tie to anchor extensions to the created ponytail.
3. Grab a small portion of the hair then wrap the section around the hair ties in order to camouflage them. Use bobby pins to lock the wrapped section of hair in place.
4. Twist the ponytail hair then secure the end of the twisted braid with one more hair tie.
5. Mist hair with a light hair oil for shine as well as a light hairspray to keep the style in place.
We thought it was going to be a night all about the guys but these ladies said not so fast! Jada Pinkett, Aisha Tyler and Garcelle Beauvais shutdown the red carpet on June 26, 2015 at the premiere of Magic Mike XXL. The star studded event was held in Hollywood, California at the infamous TCL aka Chinese Theater. The ladies wore gowns that showed a little leg and skin, but showcased their unique style.
Garcelle wore a white frock with cut-outs and gasp…POCKETS! We couldn’t believe our eyes at first for it seemed almost to good to be true. A sexy dress with a comfort feature for our keys, man sign us up!
Funny lady Aisha Tyler came out to support her girlfriend Jada and rocked a LBD (Little Black Dress). We loved the structured front panel of Tyler’s modern and elegant gown. She kept her accessories simplistic with a handbag, black heels and exotic ring.
We have been seeing the color yellow popping up quite a bit among the celebrity fold and Pinkett stunned in her own bold tinted dress. Jada looked exquisite in a gown from the Ermanno Scervino Pre-Fall 2015 collection. The magic may be Mike’s but these ladies surely enchanted us all last night!

Reading a bedtime story to your children every night can be a fun and rewarding experience for both parents and children. I remember my mom reading to me at night and it was always my favorite time of the day. One of the best books she read was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I could just imagine myself cruising down the chocolate river, chilling with the oompa loompas.
Reading to your children will help expand their minds by taking them to different places, different environments and whole new worlds without leaving the comfort of your home. Their imaginations will grow and their creative juices to flow.
It also will help them to develop good reading comprehension. Hearing you pronouncing words and reading them with feeling will help them improve the ability to understand ideas, grasp the meaning of the words, form correct sentences and use proper grammar. In addition, they will learn to love to read for themselves which is a good habit for them to establish.
Perhaps the greatest benefit to reap from bedtime reading is the close bond that can be formed. Tucking the children into bed and dimming the lights can create a soothing, cozy atmosphere in which you can both relax. The intimate setting can help your children to open up to you about whatever may be on their minds thereby forming a trust that can last for a lifetime.
Generally it only requires 15 to 20 minutes of your time to read a story to your children or a chapter or two of a book each night. It is an investment of your time and energy that you will never regret and will pay great dividends for a long time.
Singer and DJ Solange Knowles was spotted looking fabulous while walking the streets of SOHO. Solange was in town in order to be in attendance for the NYC Pride and Kiehl’s Since 1851 Celebrate Pride Week 2015 event held in New York City. So then, what was Knowles wearing while taking part in celebrations on June 25th?
In world that believes that as time passes various fashion can fall into the “Oh that was so last season” category. Obviously, Solange did not receive that memo and neither does she care which is why she is a fashion risk-taker! Knowles was looking mellow yellow in an ensemble from the Harbison Fall 2013 collection. A bold move but shows that good fashion can never truly go out of style.
Yellow is a very bold tint but it is a shade that conveys happiness, joy and fun. Knowles has never been afraid to wear this boisterous shade and has rocked on numerous occasions. Just see for yourself and get inspired to give yellow a try!
