Harpers Bazaar Pays Homage to Vladmir Tretchikoff Starring Maria Borges

Harpers Bazaar Pays Homage to Vladmir Tretchikoff

Fashion IS art. For their September 2018 edition Harpers Bazaar Pays Homage to Vladmir Tretchikoff; a Russian visionary who’s dazzling artwork still captivates and mesmerizes decades later. The editorial entitled, “The Female Gaze” is a multi-page spread that stars top models, Maria Borges as well as the lovely Xin Xie.

Harpers Bazaar Pays Homage to Vladmir Tretchikoff

Vladimir’s artistry is well-known for it’s vibrancy, vividness; and of course alluring beauty. Tretchikoff’s stunning array of portraits at times captured the essence and spirit of women from across Africa as well as Asia. Another draw to his work is that he always seemed to make the woman in his paintings ooze with regal flair.

The Female Gaze magazine editorial recreates several famous Tretchikoff pieces including: Balinese Girl, Zulu Girl and Chinese Girl (1952). Maria Borges is the muse for the Balinese as well as Zulu masterpieces.

Fashion Notes: For the recreation of Balinese Girl, Maria Borges wears a stunning headwrap garment that is a design of Eric Javits. Javits is the designer behind several infamous celebrity headpieces and hats. Including those worn by Beyoncé, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Serena Williams, Chanel Iman and Mary J. Blige. He is also the ingenious designer behind Naomi Campbell’s golden Balinese headpiece seen at the amfAR event.

“‘The internet makes everything a ‘thing.’ ‘ Tessa Mae Thompson is our Fall Fashion cover star. The enigmatic actress opens up about her high school playist; catfishing people with her friends; and yes, Janelle Monae. Plus, the most voluminous fall clothes.

The Tessa Thompson discourse lately has been loud and demanding. But the interest in her reached a frenzy when she appeared in Janelle Monae’s video, ‘Pynk.’ She told us, ‘The truth is Janelle and I are both in a space where we’re trying to push boundaries in terms of the idea of what space a woman of color can occupy.'”

“‘I currently don’t have time to date. Also, because dating right now requires that somebody gets on a plane. Which is fine, but that’s a lot to ask when you’re first… It’s a lot of expectation.’

She’s skeptical of online dating; though she admits to once catfishing people with her friends on a dating app; largely as a social experiment. ‘It didn’t go well. We had some passive-aggressive and some just like aggressive messages, being, like, ‘You’re not real!’ And I was like, ‘And you’re right, I’m not!’ Delete.'”

So as you can see, even celebs are adjusting to the new world and whirl of dating. Nonetheless, catch Thompson’s full interview as well as The Cut’s Fall Fashion preview in their spanking new issue out now.
