Now these skills are not in any particular order, in terms of importance. However, learning and applying them (meaning actually doing them); in your life will be clutch.

  • Listening: Don’t just talk over others because you like to hear yourself talk or feel what you have to say is more important. Talking is a two way street. Both cars need to be able to drive along. So don’t block someone, truly listen; take time to understand what they’re saying; then respond accordingly.
  • Positivity: You can look at the glass half empty or half full. Staying positive in all situations will help you think more clearly about solutions and give you the drive to not give up. Plus, it’s another attractive trait to others. No one likes being around a perpetual sad sack. A negative person may be nice, but their demeanor can eventually erode the positivity of those around them. Not good. So aim to always turn your frown, upside down.
  • Sharing: Share your thoughts and things with others. Being tactfully honest and sharing what you have gains real friends, plus helps the disadvantaged. Life is a roller coaster of ups and downs; you may just need help one day too.
  • Cooperating: You can’t always have your way, but you can work along with others at times to show you can be a team player. This also works wonders in dating and marriage.
  • Respecting Boundaries: Boundaries are basically mental, emotional, or physical limits you put in place between you and another person so that you can be happy, co-existing individuals. A healthy relationship must start with mutual respect, and that includes respecting each other’s physical and emotional boundaries.
  • Empathy: This is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. To walk a mile in their shoes so that you understand how they feel about something. Truly understanding how people live and feel will give you an edge in life. Most people feel misunderstood. If you take the time to understand people, you will be seen as different, in a good way. People will open up to you easier and you will build stronger relationships with others.
  • Patience: No one is perfect, including yourself. This quality allows for mistakes, forgiveness and a balance in attitude.
  • Being Responsible- Helps build trust and loyalty.
  • Verbal and Written Communication: Watch grammar, spelling and punctuation when writing and learn to adjust how you talk in various situations. You don’t always have to sound “buttoned up or boring.” At work you should sound more ‘professional.’ However, with friends, family or in other situations it is probably fine to add slang and funny expressions into the mix. The key here is to know the time, place and situation well.
  • Being Kind- Draws people in, encouraging them to like you more.
