Smile darling. Stop hiding those pearly whites and get on the natural path to a healthier mouth and fresh breath. Best part? Dentists agree that utilizing this particular essential oil is a natural way to achieve that awesome minty clean feeling without alcohol! So today we are going to share with you a few Peppermint Oil Mouthwash benefits as well as a super easy recipe for at-home use.

First of all, let’s get some of the many awesome benefits out of the way. Do you want healthier gums? Do you want to get rid of bacteria that could potentially make your breath smell like 20 day old McDonald’s? Well, consider giving peppermint oil a try.

Indianapolis Dentistry were kind enough to provide and share information on just how peppermint oil is efficient in mouth care. They reveal,

“In recent science, researchers have found that the essential oil of peppermint is the most effective in killing what are called anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that thrive in a low oxygen environment) such as the bacteria that causes gum disease.

These disease causing bacteria thrive in low oxygen environments such as below the gum line.  One study, titled ‘The antimicrobial activity of essential oils and essential oil components towards oral bacteria’ found that peppermint was among the strongest oils to kill disease causing bacteria. In another study, peppermint was found to have strong activity against certain bacterial strains, particularly mutant and wild strains.”

Pretty interesting right? Well, this same dentistry entity wants to help you try the peppermint oil mouthwash method in the comfort of your home! Here is their recipe:

“When using as a supplement, dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid. A rinse of peppermint oil diluted in water can be a great way to quickly relieve bad breath or to get rid of bad tastes. This rinse can also be effective in helping to ease minor toothaches.”

By the way we checked around and other dentists recommended that 1-5 drops would be safe.

Peppermint Oil Mouthwash Benefits and Recipe

It’s that easy! Now of course Beauty, safety first. If you’re using peppermint oil for the first time, start with a lower concentration to see how your body reacts. Others use a few drops in their mouthwash. So start small and work up if your body is able to handle it.

One last interesting tidbit and thought from the amazing professionals over at Indianapolis Dentistry. They also mention that for oral health, you can either add a drop of peppermint essential oil to your tea or to your toothpaste when brushing to experience good hygiene results. But of course, always keep up with your regular dental appointments as well; and your smile (and breath lol) will be the Belle of the ball.
