NaturallyCurly hosted their signature event Texture on the Runway on Thursday, September 6th during New York’s Spring 2019 Fashion Week. Retailer Sally Beauty returned as the retail sponsor for the innovative runway show that puts textured hair front and center. This year’s event is also a celebration of NaturallyCurly’s 20th anniversary. The media company has been at the center of a two-decade revolution that transformed the way the world views curls, coils and waves.

Two hosts, one catwalk and gorgeous natural hair? Uhm, can you say THE hair event of the year! Hosting duties went to NaturallyCurly co-founder Michelle Breyer; and recording artist and breakout star of Love & Hip Hop Miami Amara La Negra. Furthermore, seven top texture brands showcased their take on texture down the runway.

This year’s runway sponsors included Camille Rose Naturals, Cantu, Carol’s Daughter, Creme of Nature, Mielle Organics, SheaMoisture and The Mane Choice. Each amazing brand featuring their own unique textured hair inspiration. Plus, debuting looks that truly celebrate coils, curls and waves as well as fashion.

This year hair trends dipped back all the way into the decade that was the nineties. No, these are not mini-buns as some have began to refer to this hairstyle. What is shown in the various photos within this post is a natural black hairstyle that is known as Bantu Knots. How can you recreate this style and why might you want to wear it?

Let’s start with the latter portion of the above question first. Here is a quick stat that is proving that black women want to show off the true beauty of their locks. Sales for perms and relaxers are drastically declining as more and more women opt for healthier hair options. Chemicals used in those harmful relaxers have led to burns, unhealthy scalps and hair loss that for some have resulted in baldness.

Since more women are jumping on the natural bandwagon this means more natural hairstyles need to come to the fore. Bantu Knots are perfect for fun, causal outings and can even help you achieve a cute curl pattern without using heat by performing a twist out. Less heat can mean less damage for your precious tresses.

Many women who have decided to go “natural” often wonder what hairstyles are available to them that will make the transition more bearable. One style that can not be overlooked is locs aka dreadlocks. To get started with this hairstyle hair length does come into play. If your hair is longer you can incorporate more of a braided look. Moreover, if your tresses are rather short than it will be best to use single twists when fashioning your locs.

Now, just because you are going natural it does not mean that you will have absolutely no upkeep. We shall repeat that one more time LOL, there will be some maintenance involved even though this hairstyle is low key. Natural hair still needs attention and some tender loving care. We love a stylish braid because this hair look is so great for black hair. It serves as one of the protective hairstyles which means your strands will be protected from harm while fashioned in this style. For instance, your ends are safely tucked in keeping them from rubbing against something or the elements so that they do not fray or split.

Moreover, besides being deemed safe for tresses it is also versatile for day and nighttime wear. Hairstyles that can be worn day or night will save you time and much needed energy! Plus, if taken care of this particular style should last at least a few days before needing to be refreshed or restyled. Sweet!

We spotted Alicia Keys with her own version of the Halo aka crown braid. Alicia chose to have her crown braided and wrapped around down into a single braid. A great version in order to look like a laid back goddess.

FKA Twigs is not the type of girl who is going to follow the crowd off of a style cliff. She goes her own way and makes her own fashionable path. We thought her braided bang look was quite fresh and a nice modernization of a retro Egyptian hair look.

Of course, not every woman is going to be comfortable with channeling Cleopatra or the trendy ladies of Moses’ day. However, if you are looking for a boisterous departure from the norm then the braided bang may be right up your alley.

Nevertheless, still want to take things up a notch further because braids are simply not enough? Be like FKA Twigs or the William sisters of old and incorporate some beads.
