This all comes on the heels of Prince Harry and Meghan’s return to England for their final royal engagements. In which the duchess dropped the fashion mic in one mesmerizing design after the other; for the whole world to see. Furthermore, in true fabulous fashion, Meghan is remaining high above any British press negativity; and continuing in her charitable and honorable acts towards the world and environment; with her latest assignment with Disney. How?

First and foremost it should be noted that neither Meghan or Prince Harry is being paid for Elephant. Meghan participated because she wanted to and due to the good it will do for elephants in general. Disney is donating funds to Elephants Without Borders. You may recall the couple visiting Botswana in 2016 and 2017 to help Dr. Mike Chase (founder of Elephants Without Borders) to help with the relief effort there. Therefore, Duchess Meghan had plenty of initiative and drive to be apart of this well-kept secret of Disney.

Nevertheless, this long-awaited project has been a quite “hush-hush” collaboration between the Duchess of Sussex and Disney Nature even on into 2020. However, the entertainment giant finally broke the silence once and for all. Disney took to social to announce today that not only was the project completed; but it would air in LESS than a week! The release? Elephant, a documentary that follows a herd of elephants during their trial some journey across the unforgiving desert.

Viewers are taken on an insiders look into just what elephants face during their “pilgrimage.” The audience is treated to getting to know members of the herd more intimately. The doc focuses on an elephant named Shani and her son, Jomo. The pair travel along with their herd across the “Kalashnikov” desert.

What desert? Okay, we have a confession, the desert in the doc is actually called the Kalahari desert. We’re glad you caught that. Now there are plenty of areas and regions in Africa that are well known. However, the Kalahari or “Kalashnikov” desert may not be one of them for a lot of people.

Therefore, we thought it would be cool to dip a toe in the educational pool in order to find out about this desert that is showcased in the film. Honestly, this Disney documentary will be most helpful; because there’s really not much information out there. A quick Google search will basically yield you nothing… well if you search incorrectly.

Not only will you not gain much info BUT you may even be left confused. Search up Kalashnikov Desert and you’ll mostly like see a range of knives and guns. To help one survive out in the desert (LOL). Definitely not what we’re looking for right?

The Kalahari desert is found in Botswana; see… more familiar and interesting already! The region is full of beauty and GREAT wealth. According to Wikipedia,

The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savanna in Southern Africa extending for 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 sq mi), covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibiaand regions of South Africa.

Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word Kgala, meaning “the great thirst”, or Kgalagadi, meaning “a waterless place”;[1] the Kalahari has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent surface water.

A semi-desert, with huge tracts of excellent grazing after good rains, the Kalahari supports more animals and plants than a true desert, such as the Namib Desert to the west. There are small amounts of rainfall and the summer temperature is very high.

The San get most of their water requirements from plant roots and desert melons found on or under the desert floor. They often store water in the blown-out shells of ostrich eggs. The San live in huts built from local materials—the frame is made of branches, and the roof is thatched with long grass.

In 1996, De Beers evaluated the potential of diamond mining at Gope. In 1997, the eviction of the San and Bakgalagadi tribes in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve from their land began. [However] in 2006, a Botswana High Court ruled in favor of the San and Bakgalagadi tribes in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, claiming their eviction from the reserve was unlawful. The Government of Botswana granted a permit to De Beers’ Gem Diamonds/Gope Exploration Company (Pty) Ltd. to conduct mining activities within the reserve.

These fearless elephants will have to do the “impossible” as well in order to achieve their goal. And make it across the desert with their matriarch, Gaia.
