No one likes for their skin to be blemished, but unfortunately we all have to deal with acne from time to time. Contrary to popular belief, acne is not just for people with oily skin, it can strike people of all skin types. What should you do if you have an outbreak?

First of all, don’t scratch or pick at the acne, resist the urge to pop those pimples. It would be much better to use a treatment and let it go through the natural healing process by drying, scabbing and healing on its own. Second, if you have more than mild acne (whiteheads, blackheads, papules), see a skin care professional. A dermatologist can help treat your acne without damaging your skin and avoiding scarring and dark marks.

There are many ways to treat acne and some skin types will be more sensitive than others so you will need to find the treatment that works best for you. However, there are some universal acne treatments that seem to work well for most black skin types. Both Neutrogena Acne Wash and the Proactive suite of products seem to do the job for many people. In the meantime, here are some tips for keeping your skin healthy and happy:

  • Drink lots of water
  • Eliminate junk food from your diet
  • Get as much sleep as you can (at least seven to eight hours per night)
  • Eat high fiber foods to keep yourself regular
  • Check to make sure any medications you take aren’t effecting your skin
  • Stay out of the mid-day sun to avoid the harshest rays of the sun
