New York Fashion Week continues to plop us into a time machine and transport us to the era that was the 80s. The Marc Jacobs Fall 2018 runway show absolutely brought it. Showstopping pieces and over the top couture that displayed impeccable tailoring and pure opulence.

This fall go big. Marc Jacobs is leading the way to this trend with his latest collection showcasing humongous shoulders, hats and trousers. A nice departure from the normal “less is more” ensembles checkered throughout social media.

Jacobs entire collection is noticeably very modest. No high splits. No cut-outs. Just garments oozing of extravagance and tons of flashy appeal. Throughout the show models strutted down the catwalk in designs that covered them completely from head-to-toe.

The point? If you are not into skin or would enjoy mixing it up; you can still be insanely fashionable without displaying cleavage or legs. Marc Jacobs proves that covering up can still be uber glam and make a strong style statement.

Nevertheless, besides the designs themselves even the accessories could not be ignored. Handbags with studded detailing, vibrant diamond encrusted and bow mules; black gloves and larger than life wide brim hats. Nothing was left to chance. Every detail, every element is captivating art.

Speaking of details, the Marc Jacobs label let out a few couture gems in regards to the Fall 2018 line. The couture brand gets into the overall vibe and selection of fabrics. MJ says,

“Sharp hats and even sharper haircuts. Introducing Marc Jacobs Fall 2018! Huge flourishes, gestures, broad strokes and silhouettes expressed in rich and gorgeous fabrics. From double faced cashmeres, meltons and tweeds to faille; moires, iridescent and flocked taffetas, radzimir, velvet and warp print satins.”

“The concept of this series began with wanting to portray a new, younger, and different side of life. From there I let the fashion be my playground for my imagination. I want to probe politics of representation in these clothes that so clearly tied themselves to notions of street culture and hip-hop.

It’s important during this time to give life and voice to black people you wouldn’t normally see in high fashion spaces. I just wanted to depict a carefree Sunday in New York that felt free from political frenzy. However, sometimes you still feel the trouble creeping in.”

“We were inspired by the attitude and feeling of the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2017 show. The collection felt both current and nostalgic. Giving us vibes of the 70s/80s NYC streets, like the subjects in Jamal Shabazz photos.

We picked an interesting group of subjects. People we know personally, models, kids we met on my street in Flatbush. We wanted to mix in their distinct attitudes and personal wardrobes into the styling.”

We feel the revival of another 90s fashion trend! Our favorite petite fashionista, Karrueche Tran, was on hand to reveal the Marc Jacobs Patch Marc designs. What is Marc Jacobs Patch Marc and why is it so fab?

Back in the day patchwork was kind of a big deal. The more pins and patches you could fit on your clothes the better. Girls would flock to stores to get their tiny hands on new patch designs and force their parentals to iron them on ASAP.

The cool thing about patches is that it is an easy way to showcase personal style. Think your name is interesting? Try throwing your initials onto your jacket. Like ice cream? Well best to believe there is a patch for that too.

Moreover, who doesn’t like something specially tailored for them? Jacobs is filling in the gabs by allowing wearers to look great and infuse their look with quite of bit of fun. By the look of things Jacobs is definitely not missing the Marc on this one (wink, wink).

Karrueche and Marc Jacobs took to social channels to spread the word about Patch Marc. Jacobs said regarding a photo of Tran, “Karrueche at our Patch Marc event today in New York City. Come stop by 113 Prince Street, NYC or 8400 Melrose Place, LA between 6-9PM and customize pieces from our Resort ’17 collection.”

Karrueche showed off her cute denim jacket with the caption, “Designed by own Marc Jacobs Denim today.” Tran’s jacket included lettered patchwork of her initials, hearts and checkered stars.

Not that Marc Jacobs needs that type of help at all. Yet, its cool that a major couture house recognizes Missy’s strong style. What did MJ have to say about Missy’s style and selecting Elliot?

Black Beautiful Women: Naomi Campbell Book Release

Black beauty was certainly beheld tonight at the Naomi Campbell book release celebration! Campbell’s book, Naomi, is a compilation of the supermodel’s outstanding career in the modeling industry. It is a hybrid two volume edition that tells of Naomi’s beginnings as well as showcases her entire exquisite modeling port.

The fashion elite as well as entertainment’s movers and shakers were all in attendance. Guest included celebrity stylist June Ambrose, CNN anchor Don Lemon, PR extraordinaire Randy Bowden Jr., Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour, Designer Marc Jacobs, Taschen CEO Benedikt Taschen and models the Hilton sisters and Bella Hadid. For the fabulous affair Naomi Campbell dazzled onlookers in a custom made design by Marc Jacobs.

Why should the Naomi Campbell book release mean so much to us black girls? Contemplating on what Naomi has been able to accomplish for three decades is something to marvel. Campbell began her career during a time when black models were barely seen on covers much less a catwalk. Yet, she rose to be an iconic supermodel of the 80s. She helped pave the way for more diversity as well as opportunities for black girls wishing to be apart of an industry that’s standard of beauty did not always include those of a darker shade.

Naomi rose to success not because of her skin tone, but because she possessed the talent, drive and finesse to make it happen. For every shoot, appearance and show she always presented herself at the highest level possible. She is a strong example that confidence, determination and a well-developed skillset can propel an individual to greatness.

What is more Naomi Campbell is still championing the success of black models and encouraging the industry to continue to diversify. Now with the release of her new book Naomi we all get a chance to turnaround and champion her and recognize her for her achievements. The Naomi Campbell book release honored the legacy of a woman that literally helped change the face of the fashion, modeling, and beauty industries forever. Thank you Naomi for being a gorgeous shining example and congratulations on your new release!

Confirmation Premiere Fashion Recap

From the first time it aired, ratings soared through the roof for Kerry Washington‘s hit television show Scandal. With so much weekly tea as well as twist and turns viewers could not seem to get enough of the racy show. Recently, Kerry has taken her talents and starred in yet another bewitching storyline for a biopic entitled, Confirmation. Confirmation is the real life story of Anita Hill, a woman who dared to give testimony regarding sexual harassment during the Senate confirmation/nomination hearings of Clarence Thomas. Last night, at the HBO Confirmation premiere several leading ladies of black Hollywood were in attendance.

Lets start with the lady of the hour, Kerry Washington. Washington stunned in a $4k floral frock by Dolce and Gabbana. Moreover, Washington took care of style business right down to the smallest of details. Her mani was in a gorge neutral shade. With such a bold ensemble it was nice to see a more muted nail look that would not compete in a negative way with the rest her look.

Next up, is the gorgeous Gabrielle Union! At the Confirmation premiere Gabby even got the chance to snap a quick photo with Washington on the red carpet. Union sprinkled her own dose of black girl magic with a dress by Marc Jacobs. We absolutely loved Gabrielle and Kerry’s updos for the evening. The face-framing pieces and flowing tendrils of strands gave their hair a very romantic feel.

Not last but very least, let’s talk Zendaya! What did Zendaya adorn herself with for the Confirmation premiere? Coleman slayed in a colorful garment made by designer Rani Zakhem. Her hair also had a romantic flair due to a deep middle part with cascading waves. Can you say perfection?

Marc Jacobs A/W 16 Seductive Finger Waves

We are still lusting after the alluring hair seen at the Marc Jacobs A/W 16 fashion show. For the their strut down the catwalk model’s strands were fashioned into finger waves. It was enough to make any Flapper livid with jealousy.

The model’s hair were molded into different versions of the same style. Some ladies had ‘traditional’ wavy locks with all tresses up, while others had strands in the back left to hang loosely. We even noticed waves being created on very short natural hair. The common denominator was the sparkly glitter added throughout the hairstyle.

The marriage of vintage and modern clothing was beautiful. Finger waves are definitely a hairstyle that can not be ignored. Yet, the style added an edgy, goth sophistication to the overall look of the designs. All without stealing away the spotlight from the real stars… the couture.

The Marc Jacobs A/W 16 show was hauntingly gorgeous to say the very least. From the chime music to the fur, lace, glittering prints, big bows, feathers, long hand gloves, flowing gowns and metallic detailing our style cup runneth over!
