Let Down your Hair
We’ve seen the look in magazines, on television, and on countless websites. Having down-to-there hair is a look that many women like to and love to rock. I don’t know if it is the flicking, twirling, wind-blowing through it or flipping it around action that we see so often that makes having long hair so appealing to females. It’s just that unfortunately; the truth is some of us need a little help to achieve this desired length of tresses.
So what do we do, we break out our pack of extensions and hope to God a strong wind doesn’t blow or that handsome guy we know doesn’t cop a feel and tug. I think many of us have come to the conclusion that if we are going to resemble Rapunzel then it’s going to be our own hair stealing the spotlight. However, growing long hair can be quite a challenge and takes dedication and persistence.
Quite frankly, there are not any shortcuts when it comes to growing out your hair. On average hair only grows between 6-8 inches per year and that’s if everything about us is healthy. So to be successful in this, you have to be very diligent in taking good care of yourself inside and out. Recently, I chatted up some of my celebrity hairstylist friends and asked them to share some tips on growing long hair. Here are a few of the things they told me would be beneficial:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Get plenty of rest
- Take vitamins, minerals, and herbs ( include B-6, biotin, Inositol, Beta-Carotene and folic acid)
- Eat a healthy diet
- Exercise regularly (stimulates blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles)
- Weekly scalp massage
- Hot oil treatments (protects hair’s shaft)
- Regular Trims
- Minimize your use of hot tools, chemicals, and harsh hair products
- Avoid consuming junk food, caffeine, sugar, nicotine, and alcohol
Ladies I’m not going to kid you, but even if you take great care of yourself and your hair your hair growth is also determined by genetics; therefore, it may grow way slower or faster than others. Just something to keep in mind as you continue on your hair journey so that you do not get discouraged. These tips are not too demanding and if we are really truthful with ourselves we know they are things that we probably should be doing anyway. So then, it is possible to achieve long hair, it just takes effort and a healthy lifestyle.
Diet Your Way to Longer Hair
Now just so we are all on the same page we are not talking about those fad or drastic diets that can be quite harmful to your health in the long run. Nevertheless, it has been shown that a diet incorporating nutrients and protein can improve the condition of the hair keeping follicles strong. Which is great news because remember less breakage means length will be retained. Most women believe that their hair is not growing when in fact it is always growing. The issue is that when hair is not healthy or it breaks any length achieved is not noticeable.
It is recommended to add omega-3 oils into your diet to help get you on the way to Repunzel tresses. Nuts, almonds, supplements and salmon can help strengthen strands. One last word on dieting, if you are trying to grow your hair avoid yo-yoing at ALL costs. Such extreme dieting can cause stress and effect hormone levels thus affecting your hair.
How Fast Does Hair Really Grow?
On average hair researchers have discovered that hair grows about half a millimeter per day. This means over the course of one year strands can grow a total of 6 inches or half a foot. Nevertheless, other factors do affect hair growth including but not limited to: genetics, age, pregnancy and hormones. Knowing the average will help keep hair growth in the right perspective without it becoming a discouraging process. Hair is continuously growing and with proper haircare techniques your strands will keep growing in the direction you want them to… down south.

Aromatherapy and Hair Growth
Can using aromatherapy on a daily basis cause hair to grow? Scientists say yes and several studies have shown a direct link between growing longer tresses while using aromatherapy. Therefore, what has been the findings on this subject and how can all women benefit from such a treatment?
In 1998 researchers conducted a study where patients massaged aromatherapy oils into their strands, scalp while also focusing on their ends. The result of the study conducted by the Archives of Dermatology was significant as well as measurable improvement in new hair growth! This means that a daily routine of hair massage using aromatherapy oils will give you healthier, stronger and longer tresses. Look out for our future post on aromatherapy oils that you should try.
