Do you tend to wait to the last minute in order to get things done? Does the simple thought of doing certain tasks stress you out? Or perhaps do you struggle with organization or delegation? If you do, this article is here to help you out. It will go over ten methods that will help you resolve a common issue… how not to procrastinate.

First of all, if this is problem for you. Understand you are not alone. This is an area that many have to work on and improve.

In fact, the American Psychological Association mentions that, “Approximately 20% of adults are identified as chronic procrastinators. A broader survey found that 42.6% of adults procrastinate often or daily, with 20.5% reporting it as a daily issue. Only 15.6% of adults claim they never procrastinate.”

For those of us still in school, this could potentially be an even bigger challenge. Studies also show that around 50% of college students procrastinate in a consistent and chronic manner, while 75% consider themselves to be procrastinators, and 80%–95% of college students say they tend to procrastinate.

So then, what can be done? Two main things to fix are time management and properly planning. Whether a task is big or small, you don’t have to do it all at once. Doing a little something everyday can get you to where you want to be.

Think of it like doing a puzzle. Yes, you could sit down and do it all at once. OR you could do it a little bit each day. If you felt like doing more you could; if not, just work on one section for the day. In time you would finish the entire puzzle and enjoy the fulfillment of seeing the final result. And the most beautiful and satisfying part, is that you did without stressing yourself out. You did a steady, consistent pace that still got the task done.

The above example demonstrates perfectly how time management and proper planning works. You decide how much of a task to get done every day. If you can do it all, great. If not, by doing SOMETHING, you still have moved yourself forward to accomplishing your goal.

Here are some other great tips:

  • Keep your daily to-do list manageable and realistic
  • Break larger projects into smaller tasks
  • Eliminate the things that are encouraging laziness
  • Minimize distraction around you
  • Reward yourself for getting things done
  • Give your tasks a time limit
  • Spend no more than 1-2 hours at a time on each project or class
  • Chunk your daily studying: study each subject a little bit each day so you don’t get too far behind any one class
  • Set up a five-day study plan.
  • Factor breaks into your day
  • Do one thing at a time
  • Tackle the hard stuffs first
  • Utilize 2 Minute Rule: If you face a task that can be completed in two minutes or less, you should do it immediately rather than postponing it or adding it to your to-do list
