They don’t call it Black Girl Magic for nothing! For centuries, black women have been the movers, shakers and straight up innovators; that have tirelessly pushed forward the boundaries of society’s accomplishments and progression. Therefore, for Women’s History Month we are highlighting just a few of these amazing ladies, because their stories are an inspiring phenomenon!
For instance, did you know that the first female self made millionaire, according to Guinness World Records; in the United States is a black woman? Well, it’s true. And you will learn about her a little later on in this feature. However, so many wondrous individuals like this exist in our history.
From science to music, technology to sports; black girls and women are the blueprint. Often imitated, but never duplicated. From great minds, to great athletic ability, they have changed the world and resulting culture.
These fabulous women had to become greater than those before them, and they rose to the occasion. Nevertheless, this article is NOT about ego; it is just a celebration of success as well as achievement. A quick, yet tantalizing overview of how black women gave ‘shape’ and form to this world.
Namely, we are proud of these women, and their fine example and efforts. They are an outstanding group to review; in order to motivate and excite future generations to excellence. Our children must come to know these stories and talents exist. Why?
Simple…. History is not always remembered; because it is buried; or “hidden” for some. Due to various factors and systems at play, some black female history is often not familiar to the masses (such as the black women calculators at NASA; aka Hidden Figures). That is why it’s great to enjoy these friendly reminders of the past.
For as they say, those who forget history are bound to repeat it. Life should not be about returning to horrors or ways of the past. It should be about a better future, time for all.
So then, let us never forget “the greats;” or our rich, diverse history. It’s all fascinating, it’s all inspiring. Therefore, let’s go ahead and get into it!
Women’s History Month: 50 Black Women Who Did the Thing!
Women’s History Month began back in 1978, but as a single day; Women’s History Day. The movement gained traction in California and spread like wildfire throughout the years. Until being recognized as a month long celebration in the United States in 1987; and by other countries on an international level after that.
This now annual month long commemoration is a time to highlight the contributions of women; as well as events in history involving them. The U.S., along with Australia and the United Kingdom; all honor women in the month of March; corresponding with International Women’s Day, held on March 8.
In this article, all month long we will be featuring black girls and women of note, until we reach our golden number, 50. Now these are 50 ladies from the more “modern” era; however, we do recognize that there have been other women from other time periods that did amazing things. Yet, we will stick to those closer to our day.

Women’s History Month People
ALTHEA GIBSON
When you think tennis and black women, Serena Williams may come to mind. However, Althea Gibson did some heavy lifting before Williams was even born.
Despite prejudice, Gibson crossed color lines and became the first black woman to win a Grand Slam in 1956. The following year she wins the U.S. Nationals (precursor of U.S. Open); plus Wimbledon, and wins both again in 1958. In all Althea would win 11 Grand Slam titles and would go down as one of the best to play the game.
BEYONCÉ
In the 90s and early 2000s this singer had everyone Jumpin’ Jumpin’ and screaming that they are in fact, Bootylicious. However, her diva dominance continued on in her solo career, with hit after hit!
Queen Bey would go on to front multiple Super Bowl Halftime appearances and sell over records. Now she also holds the title of winning the most Grammys ever. This child surely is living her “Destiny!”
KEKE PALMER
This multi award winning actress is decades into her career and is barely scratching her 30s! From being one of the youngest to have her own day-time talk show to winning a Primetime Emmy accolade. Palmer constantly shows she is the real deal in Hollywood and entertainment.
Nevertheless, she is not only a great on the small and big screen. Keke’s talents are also impressive on the stage. Palmer is the first black actress to play Cinderella on Broadway; lending her experience to star as Ella, in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
MADAM CJ WALKER
Alright, remember at the outset we mentioned that Guinness World Record? Well, now it’s time for the big reveal! Yes, Madam CJ Walker is the first female self made millionaire in the United States.
Her fortune is due to the beauty and hair care industry. She manufactured various hair products as well as cosmetics for black women. She also donated her wealth towards the NAACP and became a patron of the arts.
