Flipping your fins may not get you only so far, but The Little Mermaid Live Action Box Office seems to be swimming just fine! Even with all the controversy in regards to the film as well as casting choices, the Disney remake is raking in the cash with a whopping $117 million opening weekend! The film is helping the movie industry get back on its feet since the theater decline during the pandemic. So far, numbers show the 2023 box office at over $3 billion, which is 28% ahead of 2022.
Nevertheless, Memorial Day weekend is always a good time for moviegoers. With a day off from work/school, many choose to catch a box office blockbuster… or two. The Little Mermaid enjoyed a four day weekend start in 4,320 theaters.
The flick starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Jonah Hauer-King as the dashing Prince Eric is already making box office history. By taking in around $120 million for Memorial Day weekend, this ranks as the fifth largest Memorial Day weekend opening ever. Amazing!
Disney is showing they still have the magic. Also, audiences are answering by going and supporting. We love to see it.
The Little Mermaid Live Action Box Office- $117 Million Opening and Only Swimming Up!
Did this colorful and musically pleasing film flop? Not at all. Despite what you may read or hear, this film is far from flopping.
First of all, in Hollywood getting your movie to cross the coveted $100 million mark is already viewed as a success. Ariel and company did so in just 3 days (hope you read that in Ursula’s voice by the way). Also, The Little Mermaid made $117 million in the U.S. alone!
Where people are raising eyebrows is with the movie’s performance overseas so far. The live action adaptation took in over $68 million internationally. Lower than other Disney movies, however, still plenty of room for growth. How? Well, currently this movie is only playing in about 10 international markets right now. For reference, the Guardians of the Galaxy is now released in all main international markets (47). Therefore, international numbers will most likely rise as the film continues to open up all over the world; so these opening figures are quite deceiving.
Furthermore, let’s do a quick comparison to one of our other favorite Disney live action movies, Cinderella! Cinderella had a huge opening weekend back in March of 2015. It opened with $70 million domestically and with a $132 million global total. Very good.
The Little Mermaid opened with $117 million domestically and with a worldwide total of $185 million. Some reports are even showing it is surpassing $200 million already. Therefore, Ariel and friends have made at least $53 million more than our fave princess of the Ball.
Moreover, Cinderella went on to make over half a billion dollars at the box office. The Little Mermaid is well on track to make half of that in a week. So no, this film is not a flop. It is kicking fins just fine.
