What’s better than going to Mr. Gatsby’s house? It was attending the Invitation-Only affair to Sue Wong “Jazz Babies” Spring 2014 Collection at the Cicada Club in L.A. All of the fashion and entertainment industry insiders were dressed in their 1920s finery to complement the collection’s theme and the elegant backdrop of the art deco club in the historic James Oviatt Building in downtown Los Angeles.

The collection’s core theme is of intricately embroidered cocktail numbers and exquisitely draped floor length ball gowns that contrast solid skirts with bejeweled bodices fit for any special occasion. There is also a range of day-to-evening pieces in beautifully muted shades including pinks and lilacs, classic blacks and beiges.

Every piece that went down the runway could be it’s own collection. You could see the care and detail and forethought of every gown that it made you want to give a thunderous applause every time a model came down the runway in one of these impeccable quality designs, and we did.

Sue explains how the collection was inspired by the 1920s flappers or jazz babies as they were called: “Before then, women were only ever portrayed as an extension of a husband or her parents. From the sparks of rebellion in the way they dressed and expressed themselves, those amazing women pioneered the kind of empowered attitudes and lives we have today.” Sue cites as inspirations women like actress Marie Prevost who spanned a career of over a hundred films from silent to talkies and Paris sensation Josephine Baker Baker (the first African-American female to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou). She adds, “They paved the way to a woman’s right to lead a truly independent life. They were strong, vibrant and fabulous!” – precisely the kind of words to describe the Sue Wong Spring 2014 Collection.

So thanks Sue Wong for taking us back to the roaring 1920s creating a portrait of the Jazz Age with your smash hit “JAZZ BABIES” Spring 2014 Collection.
