Michelle Obama's Let Girls Learn Kicks Off SXSW Music

Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott and First Lady Michelle Obama were all on hand to kick off the SXSW Music event. This very event was co-presented by AOL Makers in support of Let Girls Learn. Let Girls Learn is a U.S. government initiative that aims to make sure adolescent girls receive the education they rightfully deserve. Several quotes from Obama during the keynote address resonated with all in attendance, one being,

“Find a way to turn your blessings into something powerful that affects the lives of others.”

Michelle Obama is definitely using and turning her influence as First Lady into a positive movement as well as initiative for young girls. To help young ones see that they have the ability to do and be anything they want to be, Michelle Obama opened up during the Let Girls Learn SXSW kick off about her own experiences. She stated,

“For me, when I was younger, it was always the doubters. And I don’t know about young people here, but growing up as a black girl on the south side of Chicago, where the expectations of me were limited, as I was trying to make my way and do good in school and apply to good colleges, there were always people around telling me what I couldn’t do, always telling me how far I should only dream. And my reaction to that at that time was to prove the doubters wrong. That spurred me… ‘I’ll show you.’ They give you strength.”

As they say girls, “Let your haters be your motivators.” Like Michelle Obama never allow anyone or their expectations of you dictate what you can become. You have it within you, the power and drive to rise above thus achieving great success!
