Sweet peas are climbing flowers that grow romantic, billowy blooms, and they are quite simple to grow and care for. They’re incredibly fragrant, and produce bicolor and solid flowers in a wide variety of colors, including blue, deep red, white and lavender. They have one of the longest blooming periods of any plant and make excellent flowers to cut for bouquets.
Whether you have a simple country garden or a more formal outdoor planting area, sweet peas will make a delightful addition.
Most will grow to 5 or 6 feet, but there are shorter varieties “bush type” that are well-suited to containers. To extend the blooming season, choose a few different types. Sweet peas thrive in cool temperatures, so it’s important to get them blooming early, before summer heat knocks them out. You can plant them outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in spring.
