Some celebrities give back by starting a foundation or donating to cause they believe will make immense changes for the better. Lupita Nyong’o is taking things a step farther with a trip to Kenya with the sole mission of bringing awareness to animal cruelty. Every year numerous elephants are slaughtered with world reports indicating that the global population of elephants have dropped by a whopping 62%.
Unfortunately, the scary statistics do not just end there, especially on the continent of Africa. It is estimated that between 2010-2012 over 100,000 elephants were illegally put to death by poachers. Poachers hunt down these innocent and harmless elephants in order to possess their ivory for various goods. These staggering numbers sadly indicate that in ten years time the continents entire population will cease to existence. Therefore, what is being done about this horrible and tragic epidemic?
Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o has returned home to Kenya in order to take part in a campaign to save these poor animals from extinction. After a visit to a national park as well as elephant orphanage in Kenya Nyong’o described the visits as “life-changing. It was my first time to really have an intimate experience with elephants.” Lupita hopes the campaign will help put an end to the global ivory trade once and for all.
