Genetic hair loss is known as androgenetic alopecia and, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is the most common cause of hair loss. The hair loss gene can be inherited from either your father’s or mother’s side of the family, although you’re more likely to have it if both of your parents had hair loss. The good thing is this form of hair loss is treatable.

How do you know if you are losing your hair for genetic reasons? Pamela Jakubowicz, MD, a dermatologist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City says women with this trait tend to develop thinning at the hairline behind the bangs. It may be hard to detect at first because the condition develops slowly and may start as early as your 20s.

What can you do to stop genetic hair loss? Slow hair loss by applying minoxidil (Rogaine) to the scalp twice a day. Rogaine works on both women and men, although women should use a lower-strength formula to prevent unnecessary side effects. Moreover, women should not use minoxidil if they are pregnant or nursing. Men having genetic hair loss may be treated with finasteride (Propecia), an oral medication.
