Major shout out and congratulations to Drake who has survived an online Twitter battle and has received a platinum certification for his latest mixtape. An album that goes platinum is an LP that has been sold one million times. A feat that in today’s music industry is almost unheard of and often not achieved.
For evidence of how hard it is to go platinum these days just consider that Drake’s mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is the first album of 2015 to reach the platinum level and uhm… it’s August. Several albums have hit the market and after eight months FINALLY one has hit the one million mark in sales here in the states. That is a scary thought for artists and songwriters alike.
Many are blaming streaming music apps as being the reason artists are not moving units like in times past. The birth of Spotify and Apple Music has critics thinking matters are only going to get worse. The only other artist to receive a platinum certification recently is Taylor Swift for her 1989 album.
Music buyers these days only want to hear or listen to the songs that they truly enjoy. Making Prince’s own words at the BET awards even more relevant, “Albums remember those?” The album died once people had the choice to only purchase hits or songs off an album that was deemed hot. Fans must think Drake’s mixtape is just heat and some of best music around. Once again congrats Drake for going platinum which is no easy task in your field.
