Beyonce continues her reign as Queen for 2016. Her song, Formation, from the Lemonade album hit the number spot for most googled song of the year. Moreover, Bey herself got googled more than any other musician. Therefore, all hail the queen.

Nevertheless, a potential future princess caused quite a stir this year as well. Actress Meghan Markle from Suits is the most googled actress of 2016. Not an actress from Stranger Things. Not a lady from Game of Thrones either. However, should we really be surprised that so many would suddenly become enthralled with the talented beauty? Of course not!

The reason for the shock is because Markle’s fame went to new levels quite recently. Although known for her TV show, Meghan’s popularity began to skyrocket around October. Which means enough interest was generated in less than three months to garner Markle the top spot on the Google list. Crazy.

Markle’s world-wide fame occurred after it came to light that she was dating Prince Harry. Some were down with the swirl, others were not. The announcement created such a frenzy millions wanted to know everything about Markle. What she looked like and all her contributions to humanity.

Markle seems to have taken the bigger spotlight in stride and has been absolutely gracious. Despite mean comments she’s taken the high road and continues her work as being a great actress, supportive girlfriend and ambassador for the less fortunate. So then, go Markle and keep doing your thing girl!

What is black girl magic? This occurs when a woman of color achieves a great accomplishment that in turn can build confidence and inspire other black girls. It’s like when a fairy sprinkles pixie dust and the recipient can suddenly do something insanely cool. As success is achieved and talked about it is sprinkled upon as well as spread to the masses showing dreams do come true.

Magic was definitely witnessed as the first sweep in Olympic history in 100m hurdles took place. Americans Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali and Kristi Castlin all leaped their way to the finish line during the talent loaded race. Rollins, Ali and Castlin showed poise, determination and of course speed.

Before the start, the feeling was tense as the athletes readied themselves for the race. Pacing and stretching instantly became second nature to all. Announcer Ato Boldon then boldly declared numerous times that the Americans had absolutely no chance at sweeping the medals. Boldon may not have believed in the ladies capabilities, however they were about to silence his ignorance.

Brianna and Nia came across the finish line undisputed as the gold and silver medal winners. Then the wait was on… would they sweep?

After some time the results poured in and the outcome was revealed. It was an American sweep! Moreover, it was the first sweep in Olympic history ever and a true demonstration of girl power. Halle Berry Talks Hollywood Diversity Since Oscar Win

Halle Berry Talks Hollywood Diversity Since Oscar Win

Hollywood diversity has been a real hot topic as of late. New school and old school entertainers have all took a turn weighing in on things. This week Halle Berry spoke of Hollywood diversity while she attended the Makers 2016 conference.

This year the Oscars were deemed as being slanted or one-sided. Halle would be the perfect woman to speak on this matter due to the fact she has actually won an Academy Award. Moreover, her acceptance speech highlighted the very struggle actors and actresses of color faced… Hollywood diversity. Berry reminisced,

“I believed that in that moment, that when I said [during my acceptance speech], ‘The door tonight has been opened,’ I believed that with every bone in my body that this was going to incite change because this door, this barrier, had been broken. To sit here almost 15 years later, and knowing that another woman of color has not walked through that door, is heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking because I thought that moment was bigger than me. It’s heartbreaking to start to think maybe it wasn’t bigger than me. Maybe it wasn’t. And I so desperately felt like it was.”

Yes, believe it or not it has been 15 years since Halle’s win and a woman of color has not won since. Therefore, what is the problem, why are actors/actresses not winning or being nominated? Many have their views and theories, but some feel Viola Davis hit the nail on the head when she said, “Opportunity.” Halle Berry seems to agree, at the conference she stated,

“As filmmakers and as actors, we have a responsibility to tell the truth. And the films, I think, that are coming out of Hollywood aren’t truthful. … They’re not really depicting the importance and the involvement and the participation of people of color in our American culture.”

Opportunity of receiving choice roles and true representation in film seems to be slowing progress in Hollywood. Where is our Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet, Ben Hur, Chariots of Fire, Terms of Endearment, Rain Man, Forest Gump, Gladiator, Million Dollar Baby, The Artist and Birdman? Most films that win Oscars only show people of color under one light. From Gone With the Wind to 12 Years a Slave movie goers have only been treated to one part of Black History. We challenge filmmakers to go outside the box and take chances. For if we want Hollywood diversity to change we must also be diverse in story lines and production.

Rosa Parks Does Not Give Up Seat, 60 Years Ago Today

Rosa Parks in June 1999, when she was presented with a Congressional Gold Medal.
Rosa Parks in June 1999, when she was presented with a Congressional Gold Medal.

It may not be Black History Month but today marks a moment in time that completely changed the face of America and set in motion the demolishing of an unfair social system known as segregation. Back in the 50s segregation was still rearing its ugly head until key black figures began to emerge in order to silence its influence once and for all. One such personage was a young woman by the name of Rosa Parks.

On this day 60 years ago, 26 year old Parks was riding a crowded bus and refused to give up her seat. In those days any person of color was required to give up their seat to a non-black individual if the white section had filled up. Since Rosa resisted the bus driver’s proddings and order to give up her seat Parks was arrested. Parks then joined a growing list of of blacks who were refusing to give up their seats to white passengers. A few noted individuals for their acts of bravery in this regard would be: Irene Morgan, Sarah Louise Keys, Bayard Rustin and Claudette Colvin as well as Aurelia Browder who were part of the infamous Browder vs. Gayle lawsuit.

After Parks arrest, she was ordered to pay a fine and faced a brief time in jail. However, behind the scenes the NAACP were hard at work to shake this issue at its very core. The NAACP felt that Rosa Parks would be the perfect candidate to win the battle against segregation. They began working with Parks along with other local leaders such as Martin Luther King to stage boycotts of passenger buses even on the day Parks went to court.

To really make a point these local leaders kept expanding until the MIA (Montgomery Improvement Association) was formed. The MIA soon made plans for one big extended boycott of passenger buses. What was the result of their efforts?

Due to the fact that 75% of those taking public transportation in Montgomery were black the boycott crippled the revenues of the bus line. Moreover, the boycott lasted a little over a year showing the true unification of the black community and their strong desire to bring about change. However, success did not come without growing pains. MLK faced having his home attacked while Parks lost her livelihood being let go from her place of employment.

Nevertheless, change was on the horizon yet it would not come from Rosa Parks’ court case. The lawsuit of Browder vs. Gayle would prove to be the key to ushering in a new social order in America. The Supreme Court on November 13, 1956 ruled that segregation on buses was illegal because due to the 14th amendment it deprived blacks of equal protection.

Thanks to the courage of Parks and the entire black community of the fifties banding together segregation came to an end. These accounts show that there is strength in numbers and that true change can come about in a peaceful manner without one shot or riot. Taking a stand for what is right is not a crime, but is an inspiration for all those who can understand without bias. The battle for equal rights was won due to the belief that blacks are intelligent, equal members of society that can work together in order to bring about positive results. A house divided cannot stand, but one that is well-built and standing strong can withstand any  and all storms. Thank you Rosa for taking a stand and making life much brighter for all future generations.

Successful Black Women: Misty Copeland Named American Ballet Theatre’s First Black Principal Dancer

Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland is making history this week due to the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) naming her as it’s first black female principal dancer. We tip our heels in her honor and hope that she continues to break a leg on stage. Trust us this is no small feat because this is the first time such honors has been bestowed upon a black ballerina (2nd black dancer after Desmond Richardson) in the dance company’s entire 75 years of existence.

Successful Black Women: Misty Copeland Named American Ballet Theatre’s First Black Principal Dancer

Misty hails from Kansas City and mentioned that being a high level dancer is something she has always wanted. Copeland revealed,

“This is it. This has been my dream since I was 13, to be a principal dancer and reach these heights… But it hasn’t been overnight. It’s been 14 years of extremely hard work … I’m just so extremely honored to be an African-American and to be in this position.”

Successful Black Women Misty Copeland Named American Ballet Theatre's First Black Principal Dancer3

Copeland is shining as a luminous star at time where in the current social climate there are those who believe that members of the black community are lazy, uneducated, violent or lack proper training to accomplish great things. Such views are proved incorrect time after time by such talents as Misty; nevertheless, Copeland believes there is a much different reason as to why more black dancers do not reach the career heights that she has achieved. Misty explained,

“So many young dancers of color stop dancing at an early age because they just don’t think there will be a career path for them. I hope that will change… I had moments of doubting myself and wanting to quit, because I didn’t know if there would be a future for an African-American woman at that level. At the same time, it made me so hungry to push through.”

Successful Black Women Misty Copeland Named American Ballet Theatre's First Black Principal Dancer4

Therefore, we implore all of you young dreamers out there and even those who think they have passed their prime to NOT GIVE UP. There may be times of doubt, times when that little voice in your head wants to tear  your joy out your heart and convince you to quit. Like Misty you may feel like you are just not seeing others who “look like you” on the journey to the top. Do not be dismayed ladies, as more of us make it up  the mountain of success it soon will not feel like such a lonely place. There is plenty of room up there for everyone, let’s help each other push towards the summit… it’s closer for us all than we might think.

Congratulations Misty! You are a true inspiration for us all!
