Alicia Keys has had a revelation… she has realized something deep that has been affecting her since childhood. As music lovers we have come to know Alicia for her musical talents and have seen a strong, vibrant and engaging woman grow in front of our eyes. Nevertheless, what we see on the outside isn’t always what is truly going on inwardly.

Alicia Keys released a photo showing herself underwater posed similarly to famed boxing champ Muhammad Ali. In a caption Alicia reveals that she was inspired by Ali which has encouraged her to live her life much differently. How did this change in attitude come to fruition? Alicia writes,

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve hidden myself. It might have started in school when I realized that I caught on to things a little quicker, and teachers started to show slight favor to me, or use me as an example. I remember feeling like my friends would make fun of me or look at me as if I was different from them and so… I started hiding. Not intentionally, I didn’t mean to, but I did. Little pieces at a time.”

Throughout her hiding phase Alicia goes on to recollect all the different ways that she would conceal herself. She used clothing, hair and beauty to hide or give glimpses of her true self. She would choose not to wear makeup, baggy fashions and dresses or not do her hair all the way only because of not being sure of who she really was anymore. This confusion is something that many can relate to and speaks volumes about Alicia for being willing to nakedly share her thoughts. Nevertheless, the light bulb moment occurred for Keys that allowed her to think about her future. She says,

“Alicia!!! Why are you choosing to be that person?! That is so old and outdated!! STOP!! You are allowed to be smart, You are allowed to be beautiful, You are allowed to be radical and have strong thoughts that others might not agree with, You are allowed to be tough, You are allowed to be sexy, You are allowed to be bold, You are allowed to be shapely, You are allowed to be kind, You are allowed to be yourself!.. I don’t have to try to go unnoticed, I don’t have to fit in, I don’t have to close up my thoughts and only speak my truth through songs!”

Keys goes on to say that for the rest of her days she will speak, show, dress, grow and live that way no matter what. Alicia Keys has a brand new outlook on life and you can here about more of it through her new single 28,000 Days. Go Alicia and may we all reach our full potentials and be the beautiful black women we were raised to be!
