Christian Siriano NYFW Show Features 5 Plus Size Models!

As if we needed anymore reasons to become even bigger fans of designer Christian Siriano! The famed Project Runway alumni continues to push boundaries and break the fashion mold. So far this year, real women with real curves have been finally getting the attention they deserve kicking off with the cover of Sports Illustrated. Now it’s fashion week’s turn and Siriano hit the industry with a major exclamation point. The NYFW Christian Siriano show features 5 plus size models!

Take note fashion industry, orange is the new black and so are gorgeous curves. More on the orange reference later (wink, wink). For years, runway shows have featured one body type and one body type alone. At least 5’9 and no wider than a clothes hanger.

While these shows are lovely and entertaining one glaring fact remains… most women just don’t fit that category or build. Therefore, clothing that’s stylish often stops at size 10 if you’re lucky.

While many brands have stepped up to the plate to create clothing that’s not just either one big tent (i.e. Moo-Moo dress) or sadly plain and generic. Let’s face there’s plenty of room for improvement as well as more options. Furthermore, runway fashion is fun, cool and modern. Women of all sizes want to look that way. Yet, major designers unfortunately forget about the rest of us.

Nevertheless, that’s why the Christian Siriano NYFW show features 5 plus size models headline is such a big deal. Siriano himself said he feels that one day seeing curvy models during runway shows will be the norm. Can we get an amen? (LOL) Such an outcome would mean that more fashion houses will jump on board with showcasing real bodies as well.

Change is never easy but it always takes willing pioneers. For instance, if it wasn’t for the tireless efforts of Donyale Luna, Iman, Beverly Johnson and Naomi Campbell there wouldn’t be as much diversity in the modeling industry as we see now. Therefore, it is possible for the a major couture overhaul to occur.

The Innovative Pioneer

Christian Siriano is the perfect designer to get the ball rolling. Who of us can forget the magic he created for actress Leslie Jones? Especially, since she had to publicly mention that no designer wanted to dress her for the biggest moment of her career.

Siriano saved the day by designing a gorgeous red dress for Leslie to wear to her Ghostbusters movie premiere. Of course the gown was killer because heck, it was a Siriano design. However, it was also the fact that he crafted a dress that showed off her best assets. Proving you don’t have to be as thin as a whisper to look amazing on the red carpet or in clothes in general. It just takes a designer willing to go off the cuff or in this case off the mannequin.

Love Yourself This Summer

I know this time of season we are all consumed into looking great for summer by toning up, changing our hair color and so on. But at the end of the day the most important thing is to learn to Love Yourself. If you don’t love yourself heavy or curvy, you won’t love yourself skinny either. It’s not a magic fix for all problems. So make sure you take care of your inner-self. That will shine through no matter what size we are. I’m sure we all know ladies that may be heavy by the medias standards but they are so outgoing, they seem to have so many friends and guys are all over them. Why? It’s because they love themselves which exudes confidence and those are shinning qualities that no Pilates or exercise DVD can give you.

Plus Size Models Fighting For Size Diversity in Fashion A New Documentary Explores

Even though we are  in 2014 plus size models still have a hard time in the fashion industry because they are being told they don’t fit the norm. However in the United States in 2013 72 percent of women wear sizes 12 and above even though the industry wants you to believe that is unacceptable.

A Perfect 14, directed and produced by Giovanna Morales and produced and directed and edited by James Earl O’Brien seeks to inform consumers and change perceptions by following three plus size models through their careers.

“This film explores the controversial term plus-size and the divisive influence it has on society by interviewing designers, photographers, standard models, agencies, magazine editors, industry leaders and plus-size pioneers in the meccas of the fashion world. It combines the stories of the models with an exploration of the largely ignored topic of weightism, one of the last acceptable types of discrimination. Interviewing experts in the field of fat studies and body image, the film also exposes the collective unconsciousness of size-based segregation. It also asks the question of the media’s responsibility in its single focus portrayal of thin role models and how it takes a heavy toll on the self confidence and body image of women.
