CurlFest 2018 left the entire natural hair realm shooketh! We’re talking curl comradery, peace, love and undeniable black beauty appreciation. This amazing event is now the world’s largest hair festival and this year it went down in Brooklyn at Prospect Park.

We have had a ball checking out all the gorgeous hair and fashion style looks from ladies from all over who were in attendance. It was VERY difficult to narrow down a few of our favorites to just 75. However, we think we may have done it.

Moreover, if you are looking for inspiration to go natural OR new hairstyle ideas; you will definitely find both. PLUS, as a little fun extra we will be including some helpful natural hair tips along the way. So then, enjoy our Curlfest 2018 album and happy natural hair!

Whether your hair is in a short hairstyle, medium or long; one thing is for sure… all natural hair needs moisture! This is due to two reasons, the structural makeup of curly hair as well as the dynamics of hair growth.

If hair is dry, brittle and tangling constantly it’s simple math. It is not going to appear like it’s getting longer or more voluminous. Yes, hair never stops growing; however, if it is steadily breaking off and falling out from lack of hydration you will NEVER see any signs of real growth. Yikes.

The key then is add moisture. Since water takes longer to travel down a curly strand as opposed to a straight one, it becomes even more necessary to make sure you not only hydrate your strands; but lock all that water in. This can be achieved by applying water soluble stylers, conditioners and creams; then use a high-quality oil to lock and fence in those moisturizing products. Got it? As one can see, achieving beautiful natural hair can be a reality! However, one issue that some run into when transitioning or even thereafter is knots. Knotting up at the ends occurs when… you guessed it, ends are not getting the moisture or nutrients they need to stay healthy.

Also, FYI, ends that can not be easily passed or combed/brushed through is a good indication that it is time for a trim. Nonetheless, help prevent this little hair issue by applying hair oil to your tresses. Carrot oil and jojoba oil can be real hair savers in this particular area. However, back to the styles!

Got another quick hair tip coming at you! Hair oil is also a great product for de-tangling. This is because like conditioners and creams, it provides a nice amount “slip” to help your fingers or brush pass through. Try warming up coconut oil or jojoba oil then apply it to your strands right before untangling.

Opt for either a microfiber towel or use a tee shirt. You see other towels are made from a harsher material; and by using them you can cause unnecessary frizz as well as rough up the cuticle. Tamera Mowry -Her Stylist Rachel B Mason Reveals How to Get Her Hair

As all curly girls know, your strands are only as beautiful and manageable as your product arsenal. Here’s what Rachel keeps in hers get Tamera Mowry glamorous curls! Mason states,

“I want to give a shout out to Deva Curl for providing us over on The Real with some of your styling products and tools. They get Tamera Mowry’s curls so luscious and fluffy. And for those of you who wanted to know what we use on Tamera’s hair, well here it is.”

Deva Curl is absolutely amazing especially if you are currently wearing your tresses curly or wavy. The products are affordable and effective. Plus, they even have styling tools to make hair drying a cinch. Nevertheless, are there any other products Mason would strongly recommend for the curly and wavy hair squad? There is! She says,

“Product of choice today [is] Shea Moisture’s new product Red Palm Oil and Cocoa Butter [collection] for shrinkage prone hair. I tested it on a client and I liked how the Curl Strench Pudding has just enough weight to it to keep the hair from shrinking too much during the dry process.

It’s not drastic but you notice a difference in the hair shrinkage. What’s key during the diffusing is to leave very little dampness in your hair, you don’t want to dry your hair out.”

With numerous awards, celebrity clientele and several hit shows under her belt; we wanted to know what inspires Mason to continue to be so successful in the hair industry. She reveals,

“Yeah so I was at mom’s place and came across these old photos of my pops and granny. Let me just say they are the reasons why I am the professional Hairstylist I am today. They were driven. They were innovative. They had growing hands.

They had knowledge. Skills. Spiritual. They were creative. They were hungry. They were determined.

They had strength during times when we (you know what I mean) weren’t acknowledged for our talents and creations but set pride aside and did what needed to be done to support their family. And honey child I am here to say I got all that in my DNA. 3 generations… different eras.. similar challenges; [and] all good people. I wish they were here today so I could thank them at least; for passing it down to me. Forever grateful.”

Last thing we wanted to know was Mason’s thoughts on the long held black hair question, “What really does it mean to have ‘natural’ hair?” There are so many opinions out there. However, many do not realize being natural does not necessarily refer to hair being curly or coily.

Therefore, this subject is something we felt a professional view would be cool to have. So then, what does hair stylist, Rachel Mason have to say about it? Rachel states,

“Okay, so I want to make clear what going natural means. It means cutting out any and all chemical services to your hair. No color. No highlights. No relaxers. No perms. Virgin hair.

Easy enough right? I mentioned previously that I was going natural. I am. I am just going through something called a transition stage. You can cut it all off and rock a cute fade if it fits you to do so; rock a TWA or just cut the hair that is chemically treated and start there.

This is MY transition look and I chose to gradually go natural. I like to curl it, press it out or set it on some rods. I personally like the ability to change my hair when I feel like it and not be stuck with one look. I used to be like that once upon a time.

[However] very soon I will be completely natural, free of chemical or have virgin hair. But don’t be surprised if you see some color later down the line for summer! Here’s the thing ladies if you want to do it, do it! Make sure you do it for you and do it right. A hair clip, that’s high fashion? Oh yes, dear! What we love most about this hairstyle and hair accessory combo is that it really exemplifies the attitude of a boss. An entrepreneur is usually busy, attending meetings, running around town and just simple handling things. With that kind of work load sometimes the best one can do is throw their hair in a pony or topknot and call it a day. As a side note, you might also want to try alligator hair clips!

Alexander pulls from this business aspect and translates it into a smooth, sophisticated hairstyle. The model’s in the runway show tresses were pulled back with the front kept super slick. After that the now signature silver AW clip was added into the hair mix.

To create this sleek do the Wang Gang called upon the expertise of Redken. Therefore, in order to get the official scoop we went right to the brand. In regards to the runway look and product used Redken reveals,

“This just in the claw clip is back. Redken Global Creative Director, Guido Palau, placed sleek ponytails in sliver clips at Alexander Wang as a nod to the 80s. Guido used Satinwear 04 to blow dry the hair; smoothed hair back with Mess Around 10, and set styles with Forceful 23.”

Hair Notes: One other cool thing we observed about this hair look is the use of double clips. Two AW silver clips were used for the models that had thicker or longer strands. This is a neat trick for curly girls who would like to try this out, but have a lot of volume. By utilizing multiple accessories this style can still be achieved.
