Multi Tasker- Why Being One WILL NOT Make You More Successful

Multi Tasker

If there is one thing you should takeaway from this article it’s this, “What you focus on, is what you will get.” Seriously, if you are all over the place like a bag of spilled marbles; how do you expect to actually get anything done for real? May sound blunt, may sound harsh; however, after reading why this is the case, you will be happy about getting a little tough love. For years, the idea of being a multi tasker has been praised as some sort of superhuman ability; that can not only save time, but make you more of a working powerhouse.

Wrong. While in theory being a multi tasker sounds legit, it can actually cause you to get less done. Self-improvement and science author, James Clear, put it this way,

“Your outcomes are a lagging measure of your habits. Your net worth is a lagging measure of your financial habits. Weight is a lagging measure of your eating habits. [Also] your knowledge is a lagging measure of your learning habits. You get what you repeat.”

Multi Tasker

Therefore, what you habitually do with your time and efforts is what you will get out of them. However, if you are constantly and repeatedly “doing too much,” spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere. You are basically going to be stuck. Looking forward and backward, but not making any ground.

Multi Tasker- Why Being One WILL NOT Make You More Successful

The following diagram really illustrates the importance of not being lured by the finesse or idea of multitasking. As one can see, Worker 1 is choosing to be more focused on one given task at a time. Then takes a break in order to recharge or do “lesser” activities.

Multi Tasker

Worker 2 is trying to accomplish multiple things at once. Starts one task then easily gets distracted doing something else. In the end, Worker 2 works just as hard (if not harder) and gets less accomplished.

The lesson? Work smarter, not harder. Instead of trying to be a multi tasker; aim to prioritize what is most important. Next, block off times for intense focus in order to REALLY hone in and get your work done.

This means no phone or any distractions. Don’t think having access to apps and your emails can make you work less efficiently? Well, back in the early 2000s, James Clear, spoke about a study which showed that average people check their emails every five minutes.

Further, when checking their emails it was sucking up about 64 seconds in order to get back to any previous tasks. Simply put, people could waste 1 out 6 minutes just checking emails. If that was the stats, back then, you can assume it’s even worse now.

Multi Tasker- Why Being One WILL NOT Make You More Successful (Continued)

Multi Tasker

Besides emails today we have photo sharing, tweets, DMs, texts and snaps. You may soon find yourself losing more than just one minute. So then, do not be fooled. Multitasking or double tasking does not work and can make you less productive.

Learn to focus. Focus on doing what is actually going to make you more successful and limit any distractions. You are only going to get what you focus on SOLELY. If blogging is your money maker, then dedicate a serious block of time to blogging. Or if you are a social media darling, then by golly get social and really make it count!

The point is, no matter what it is you want in life, you have to have a solid plan and eagle eye focus to get it. Someone climbing Everest isn’t looking around at a surrounding mountain and deciding to go climb it. Then get to the second mountain and decide to go back to Everest. Sounds silly right? This climber will never get to the top of either peak.

However, this is how some approach their work. Climbing towards their goal, but stopping to go tackle something else. Instead of being a silly climber, carve out good work ethic and practices; focus on what’s most important- one task at a time- and watch the magic happen.

Spotlight: Meet Desiree Byfield – The Boss Woman Behind Young, Gifted and Black!

Boss Woman

In the words of Kelis, many women around the world are starting to shout, “I’m a boss!” … and truly live it! So then, what does it actually take to be a Boss Woman in today’s Instagram, online and ever-changing business realm? Well we recently, had the honor of chatting up Desiree Byfield, one of the co-creators of one of our fave platforms, Young, Gifted and Black.

Desiree spilled all on what it took for her to get started as an entrepreneur and how you can do it too! Ready to be inspired? Read on to learn more about this amazing and empowering female CEO!

Spotlight: Meet Desiree Byfield – The Boss Woman Behind Young, Gifted and Black

Q: Desiree thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us for this edition of Spotlight! First of all, please tell us a little about yourself. Where are you based, and also what are you interested in, etc.

A: I’m 25 years old and I’m based in West Palm Beach, Florida. I’m interested in fashion, makeup, but also how we can make the world a better place by coming together.

Boss Woman

Q: Wonderful! What inspired or motivated you to start your own platform?

A: Honestly I felt a strong urgency to bring the black community together. A dream came to me and all I remember seeing in my dream was the words Young Gifted And Black. I couldn’t figure out why but eventually it all came together.

Spotlight: Meet Desiree Byfield – The Boss Woman

Q: Simply amazing. Would you say it was easy to get started, or were there a few challenges in the beginning?

A: Surprisingly it wasn’t a hard thing to get started because everyone in our community instantly loved the concept and supported it. [Furthermore] they all felt like it was something we needed to do.

Q: Yes, it is definitely needed it. You know, we always aim to encourage young black girls and women in general to become entrepreneurs; but sometimes we notice they don’t do it because they do not believe they can. So how do you stay motivated to keep pushing as a boss woman?

A: I always wanted to be an entrepreneur because I never liked the thought of working for someone else. What keeps me motivated is that very same fact, a lot of black women quit before they even get started. I have a younger sister she’s 19 and she’s an amazing artist. I just want to show her it is possible with the right steps taken of course!

Q: Alright, we hear that! Plus by the way, we absolutely love all the empowering merch that you are selling! They’re cute, fun, and inspirational. Why do you feel it’s so important for girls of color to be able to purchase clothing and accessories that has such an upbuilding message?

A: It’s important for me to advertise uplifting messages for young black girls on our brand because, unfortunately, in the year of 2018 I am 25 years old and I still don’t see enough mainstream brands for people of our color. In mainstream news/media etc. the image of women with lighter skin colors are glorified; and forced on the public like that is the only image that is viewed as beautiful, smart, or positive even. It’s very important for young black girls to view themselves on TV or in fashion in a positive light or else they simply will never believe those things.

Boss Woman

Q: Love that! So then, what do you hope that Young, Gifted and Black will accomplish in the coming years?

A: I hope that it can bring our black community together so that they can genuinely support one another. I hope that it can be accepted & viewed by other races as something positive and not something that is threatening or something that makes them feel uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a confusion when it comes to the black community showing self love.

A: I try to drink lots of water and I’m working on transitioning into eating healthier it’s a work in progress lol. But I am interested in becoming vegan because health is very important and a lot of people who became vegan look great!

Q: Awesome! Thanks again for gabbing with us today Desiree, we absolutely enjoyed it! Lastly, how can our readers connect with you? Hit us with your social handles, etc.

Achieving the Dream: 6 Tips to Reach Your Goals Once and For All!

Achieving the Dream

I’m going to finish school! I will buy a house! I’m going to jumpstart that business! I will get in the best shape ever! Sound familiar? Achieving the dream may seem fantastic and attainable at the beginning of the year; however, for most, weeks and months later they find they are still stuck at square one.

What happened? Life. We get busy, changes occur or things just don’t go our way. Regardless, of what the background story or reason may be; our dreams and accomplishing goals never disappear into thin air. We still want to stretch out our hand as far as it will go to scoop them up, but sometimes we don’t always get there in one try.

Actually, you will be comforted to know that MOST people will experience “failure” or “setbacks” before they reach the success they are after. Nonetheless, is it really a failure if we try yet don’t succeed? Of course not!

Achieving the Dream: 6 Tips to Reach Your Goals Once and For All

Achieving the Dream

You can still get what you want and to where you want to be, it just means you may have to start fresh. A little reboot if you will. Here’s 6 tips that can help you reach your dreams even after starting over.

  1. Think of your dream as the overall objective. Set 2-3 smaller, reasonable goals that will help you to reach that particular objective. For instance, if your objective is to get into shape; your goals may include: walking 3 times a week, doing resistance training twice a week and to cut out soda completely. By doing those three things consistently you will certainly notice a change and get closer if not attain your objective.
  2. Buy a planner or calendar. These nifty tools will help you to not only stay organized but be accountable. You’ll be able to schedule tasks that will help keep you focused daily, weekly and monthly.
  3. Make a list of things that waste your time. Try to eliminate at least one of them. Wasting time on unimportant tasks is one of the biggest reasons people lose their focus and get off track.
  4. Leave the past in it’s rightful place … the past. Mistakes happen, things get overwhelming and restructure may be in order. The key is not to allow anything to throw you off. Let your history be just that as well as a learning lesson as to what worked and did not work so well.
  5. Be willing to embrace change and try new things. Doing the same routine and act will only yield the same old results. So if you want to start fresh and achieve a new ending you must aim to step out of your comfort zone and try out new things as well as tactics.
  6. Don’t beat yourself up for starting fresh or over. Embrace the process and realize that it’s persistence and consistency that will make you successful.

Achieving the Dream: 6 Tips to Reach Your Goals Once and For All -Final Words

Achieving the Dream

Think of achieving the dream as a baseball game. A player steps up to bat. The pitcher hurls the ball and the player takes a swing. Miss. Pitcher changes up his pitch style when throwing the ball for a second time and the player up to bat swings again. Another miss.

Now let’s say the third pitch is different from the first two and the pitcher throws this one with all of his might. The player batting takes a final swing. A HOME RUN! Now do you think the batting player or the crowd is upset that the home run took a few tries?

Of course, they don’t care! They are still just as excited as they would be if it had happened sooner or later in the game. So then, never get upset if it takes you a few tries in order to get where you want to be.

That’s just how the game of life is. Sometimes we get it right the first time, and at other times we might have to wait till our next turn.

Nubian Stories Night Out -The Best Black Women Networking Event

Nubian Stories Night Out
Nubian Stories Night Out Founder, Tiffany Dames

So then, you are probably wondering what exactly is Nubian Stories Night Out? In order to give you the full picture, we had the event’s founder, Tiffany Dames, lay it all out for us via Q&A.

1966 Magazine: Tiffany, we think what you are doing for black girls and women is nothing short of amazing! Please tell us what exactly is the purpose of Nubian Stories Night Out (NSNO)?

Tiffany Dames: NSNO curates events for young Black professionals; and advocates for Black Women through entrepreneurship, comradery, and artistry. The past several months, I’ve curated an array of events, including a Fitness Bootcamp, Pop Up Dinner, an all-Black Women Art Expo, and on April 8th I will be hosting a Golden Parachute Black Business Mixer. Each of my previous events has gradually grown, creating a following that I strive to continue to create enjoyable experiences for.

Nubian Stories Night Out – Why Get Involved ASAP!

Nubian Stories Night Out

1966 Magazine: Very nice! Why do feel that networking events are so important for black women entrepreneurs to be apart of regularly?

Tiffany Dames: According to Fortune Magazine, “The number of businesses owned by African American women grew 322% since 1997, making black females the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S.” — This shows that plenty of us know exactly what we’re doing. However, there are even more Black women who want to make that step into entrepreneurship but cannot overcome one obstacle. Fear.

The fear of uncertainty can be debilitating. So much so, it stops us from even trying. We plan our failure more than we plan our success. Nubian Shorties Night Out strives to ease that fear by curating these events allowing us to come together, to network and build upon community economics.

Nubian Stories Night Out

1966 Magazine: Now that’s what we are talking about! So then, what’s next for NSNO?

Tiffany Dames: On April 8th our next event, entitled Nubian Shorties Night Out Presents…Golden Parachute Black Business Mixer. The goal is to create a space that gives Black entrepreneurs a chance to form an economic family, by building a set of connections to network and utilize for the promotion of their industry.

[Also] by continuing to curate events that promote and hire Black owned businesses, this offers assistance to budding entrepreneurs in building a successful brand and business. Essentially creating our own Golden Parachute to fall back on.

Nubian Stories Night Out – The Last Word

We love that Tiffany mentions the “golden parachute.” This term refers to the payment that high level executives receive upon termination. It ensures that they will be properly compensated regardless of what may happen or occur in the future.

Nubian Stories Night Out

Wouldn’t that be wonderful if that could be experienced in the black community as a whole? By networking and continuing to build together a safety net can begin to be formed.

Remember, you guys upward movement for one, is upward movement for us all. So be sure to support Tiffany’s upcoming event and check out the video below to get a taste of what you can experience by attending a NSNO event!
