Alcohol in Skincare

Beauty Quickie: When it comes to alcohol in skincare products, do you know which ones are good or bad for your skin? Yes, not all alcohols are created equal or necessarily bad; even though, oftentimes alcohol becomes like a dirty word when it comes to skincare products.

Well, today we are going to change all of that for you. We are going to give you a comprehensive list of good as well as bad alcohols normally found in skincare items. Additionally, we will briefly you tell you exactly what they are capable of doing to or for your skin.

Do you want the good news or bad news first? Well, let’s get the bad out the way. Bad alcohols unfortunately zap and evaporate moisture from the skin and can irritate it. Yikes. Here is a list of baddies to avoid:

  • Alcohol
  • Alcohol Denat
  • Ethanol
  • Ethanol Alcohol
  • Denature Alcohol
  • Methanol
  • Benzyl Alcohol
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • SD Alcohol
  • SD Alcohol 40

Now for the good. The good alcohols you find in products can bring some benefit to your skin. They are actually “fatty alcohols” that work as emollients that are naturally hydrating and moisturizing. So then, if you could use a little help in the hydration department you will want to look for a product that includes at least one of the following:

  • Glycol
  • C12-16
  • Cetyl Alcohol
  • Stearyl Alcohol
  • Lauryl Alcohol
  • Cetearyl Alcohol
  • Myristyl Alcohol
  • Butylene Glycol
  • Propanediol

There you have it. The good and the bad. As one can see, it is always very important to know what is in your skincare products. Always check the ingredients list on the back to ensure your skin is being treated properly.
