Scent can affect your mood immediately, so identifying smells that positively change your mental state can be powerful. Some scents are personal. For instance, an odor that brings back happy childhood memories can make us feel happier. That nostalgic aroma might be kids’ play doh, fresh air, trees or even hay.

Other scents have more universal effects. Smelling green apple or cucumber can help reduce anxiety. Vanilla, lavender and baby powder scents are known for their soothing properties. Simply inhaling a scent for a second or two can have effects that last for far longer.
